Q- Rich discusses Montreal

Post#1 » by maternal85 » Sat Jan 6, 2024 4:41 pm

I don't know if anybody saw this podcast. It was a good interview. Damon gave a good perspective on his mindset when he was here, and when he asked for a trade. Anyway, they ended up talking about other parts of Canada and Montreal came up. You can see the shock on Richardson face when he found out Montreal is a French speaking province. Even Derek Fisher was surprised.

Not that it was close to happening, but I think it's safe to say it'd never happen in our life. Whatever positives Montreal has, it'll never make up for being a French province in NBA players eyes. KD said the same thing as well. Watch from:

Small correction: Montreal is the city, Quebec is the province.

And yeah, that would be entirely too foreign for most American players.

Lol and people think that these guys would be happy about playing in Mexico City if they got an expansion team.

They'd probably prefer that to Mtl. At least some of them grew up speaking/exposed to SOME level of Spanish.

Attitude toward Mtl/Québec now (some people being ignorant, not open-minded, etc) reminds me attitude of Americans toward Toronto/Canada 30 years ago. Especially in the recent thread about NBA expansion.

It took Carter,Bieber, Drake and Weeknd to put Toronto on the map.

Quebec acceptance is light years away.

Americans will always stay in America, theres no changing that. Im sure the 4 celebs I mentioned above currently all live in America.

Reality is you go to America to make it big. Going from America to Quebec you are setting up yourselves up for failure, any profession.

Basketball is becoming increasingly international. Most of the best players in the NBA aren't American right now (for a few of them, French is even their first language). As a sport becomes more international, it makes the American players more tolerant too as they are exposed to foreign cultures through their teammates (look at MLB).

Everyone in Montreal speaks English. The nightlife would make up for it. I think players would love it.

Had good time traveling Montreal/Quebec but yeah, it felt totally foreign to me even though I was visiting from Toronto. I imagine that's same for American NBA players but obviously much more magnified. I don't know why some people are hung up on NBA in Montreal. It's not happening. Not even close. The city won't be able to support a team and it'll just be another failed experiment.

NBA isn’t going to waste their time trying to appease the government of Quebec and their goofy language laws. Players aren’t going to want to pay more taxes as well.

That said, basketball is growing and it’s nice to see homegrown players have success like Boucher, Dort and Mathurin.

Pretty sure the NBA will never expand to Canada again. Not in my lifetime anyway.

Somewhat related, but I remember reading that David Justice, when the Braves played in the World Series against the Jays, was afraid to leave his hotel room when the team was in Toronto because he thought everyone spoke french, based on his experiences playing against the Expos, and he was thought if get got lost he wouldn't be able to communicate with anyone.

Ohtani and the pitcher from Japan still chose America, Los Angeles.

Face it, to the foreigners, whether in Europe or Asia, they all think of America. Pop culture and every top tier brand and league coming from the US plays a big part.

You would think these guys would have learned something like that, but then again, all they know is basketball. Why would anyone expect these dudes to know which cities/countries are Francophone if they weren't from one?

Ohtani picked the better run team that offered him $86M more. The Jays have had no issues attracting American FAs when offering the most money.

Bieber is from Stratford, and Toronto has been on the map for a couple hundred years.

The question for the NBA is maximizing profit. If Montreal creates more money for the NBA than any other potential city, that's what matters. Not any culture map or what celebrities think.

If I were Quebec, I'd say tabernacle American celebrity acceptance.

and the city where he didn't have to move that has ~100x the Japanese heritage population resulting in way more endorsement opportunities.
