Re: 76ers 2023-24 Season Thread Part 1
Ideally you want to use 80 million in expiring contracts to take full advantage of cap space as well as operate as an over the cap team.
Free agency only leaves us with what 60 mil and 3 players on the roster lol.
Also there’s no one really available in free agency. You have Pascal Siakim. I highly doubt PG13 or Kawhi are leaving LA. The team is pretty solid & the owner will pay them because he wants butts in seats for the new stadium.
It’s very risky to wait til the summer then have to settle for resigning Tobias and signing Siakim as the big move we waited for. There’s a slim chance Brandon Ingram may want out of New Orleans. Also have to keep an eye on PHX. They aren’t doing well. Replacing CP3 with Bradley Beal looks to have made the team worse. Booker playing PG is a step down for them. Even moving Ayton for Nurkic seems to have been a downgrade outside of the playoffs were Ayton clearly gave up on the team.
Donovan Mitchell may want out. But his fit isn’t there with Maxey. Dejounte Murray would be a great but the worry is if he couldn’t fit with Trae why would he fit with Maxey. Maxey may be way better off ball than Trae tho. Trae tends to become James Harden-lite when the ball isn’t in his hands.
Golden state might be ready to make big changes. Andrew Wiggins, Moody, could be had. Klay may leave in free agency if warriors lowball him which I don’t see why they wouldn’t. He hasn’t been great this year and only getting older.

Marcus Smart would be even worse of a Saltics secret agent than Al Horford was. No thanks.

Also Jaylen Brown may become available unless Boston reaches the finals again. Inspires kicks in next season. They already have Tatum Porzingis White. Going to have to figure out how to pay Jrue Holiday because I’m sure he will opt out to get a longer term deal. I think Brown may want out and Boston would be happy to oblige.
Mostly every player u hope can available will be because of a trade. We won’t be able to match salaries so we wouldn’t have to trade into our space giving the other team a massive TPE. Cant allow Boston to have a max slot level TPE lol

Horford sabotaged us via his caphold, Smart would not. In 2024 money, we paid Horford the equiv of $50 mil per, whereas Smart is only $20 mil.

Re: 76ers 2023-24 Season Thread Part 1
My final answer is we're going to trade for Dejounte Murray.
My reasoning is: he has the height/length to defend SG/SF, he can run PG, and he's scoring better than he ever has. Will be able to run the PnR with Embiid and be a threat in the midrange when Embiid pulls the defense into the paint (similar to how Harden got easy midrange buckets the last few years).
I don't think it's necessarily makes us the favorite to win, but I do think it keeps us in games without Embiid and supplements the minutes Embiid is on the bench. Nurse will have to force him into being the defensive player he once was in San Antonio. We don't actually need him to be a 20+ ppg scorer.

maybe the wrong choice of words, rather "playing style" is more appropriate. For me it's not an issue with how Smart would play on the court with embiid.

it was just a bad fit.
the whole "secret agent" narrative is bananas.
**was magnified by Horford's salary (thanks Elton).
If Horford were signed on a deal like Kelly Oubre (or the MLE), people wouldn't have such an opinion my opinion

Re: 76ers 2023-24 Season Thread Part 1
I'm starting to think my main hold ups with Jeremi Grant are my initial impressions of him offensively and the sticker shock of his new deal.
If I could somehow delete my preconceived notions (although it may be reversed defensively)... He's an athletic forward with 7'3" wingspan that, over the last season and a half, is taking nearly 6 3PA per game at over 40%, averages over 20 ppg, and gets to the line.
The shooting development has been pretty crazy. If he can get back to being a plus defender (I don't see much reason he shouldn't with less usage/being on a winning team), he fills in a lot of gaps between Maxey and Embiid at a fairly high level

Outside of Markkanen and Bridges and any stars that we know won't become available, Grant seems like as good of a fit as any. I'd like him over Siakim, Murray, LaVine.

Joel can be stubborn but from my understanding teammates love him. He got along with basically everyone except for Ben.

well then what's the real reason why we wouldn't want him?
It is sort of shameful to sign the guys your arch rival discounts? no sloppy seconds?

Which leads me to the question, is Joel capable of following? Name a player he would?
