What would YOU do with Siakam?

Post#1 » by Tor_Raps » Tue Jan 9, 2024 6:48 pm

So there are numerous reports about Siakam about whether he'll go or stay at the deadline and what that can lead to in free agency. However, I'm curious as a Raptor fan, what would YOU do in this situation given the choices.

A) Re-sign Siakam to a 4/192 year max contract extension and revisit after 6 months
B) Trade Siakam for less than his value because he will not commit to another team and wants to play out free agency
C) Hold onto Siakam for the season and see what happens in free agency

To me, it seems like common sense and have no clue why we've let this drag out so late. Re-signing the guy to a contract HE DESERVES has always been the right play. There are like 35 to 40 Max contracts handed out in the nba so don't confuse this with supermax.

Now I also felt we let the OG situation drag on too long but have loved the transaction we made. The big difference there is that OG was traded to a team where the team felt they will be able to keep him so we got great value.

If we were going to re-sign him, we probably would have done it by now. Need to trade him now, even if the value isn't great, to avoid losing him for nothing in free agency

If he's happy to sign an extension, you do it - it's a fair contract, and will make him easily tradable in the future.

If he's not, then it's time to have a serious head-to-head with him and his agent. Will he be signing a max contract with us in the offseason? Does he want to find his own journey? Figure that out, and you have your answer about what to do with him.

Sign the extension now and trade him next season when there's better offers

offer 4 year max and trade later on.

I think to answer this one needs to decide on what the return would be. I think the safest guess at this point is something like this:

1) a single lottery protected first and expirings - PHI, OKC, DET, CHA
2) Expiring and an okay young guy like Moody - GSW
3) Some bad 2025 money, a lottery protected first and a young bench prospect like Josh Green or Dosunmu - CHI, DAL

give or take a 2nd rounder.

Max him out for 4 years and trade later down the road.

The offers for a 4-5 month rental in Siakam are absolute dog poop. Might as well hang onto the better player for the rest of the season, especially given our draft pick situation.

Trade him, he's made it clear via his agent and his own comments that he likely doesnt want/see himself here long term and he wants to play for a winning team, not enamoured with being part of a rebuild. There's a few places he can go that will be playoff teams so that's a win-win.

I'd rather not be stuck with him on a max contract, too much risk of being another Lavine.

Once I saw the TSN and Sportsnet intros I knew the relationship had grown very toxic. In one of the intros, Siakam isn't even in it. In another one, he's only visible from behind in a shot of Scottie hugging him. He's been cut out of the family. I don't think there is any chance he will stay. We need to get literally anything for him at this point.

Siakam f'ed up by having his agent make the announcement he wouldn't re-sign with anyone but Toronto. Then Masia went a little psycho in response. The relationship is dead. The only way I can see it working is if Siakam bends the knee and kisses the ring and tells Masai he let his agent get in his head.
The good thing about BI is he can shoot over defenders.
The bad thing about BI is he can shoot over defenders.

I'd love to have him back on a contract that is financially feasible. Something like 150/5. We've heard many players take discounts.

The relationship has been weird since the summer. With no info to go on, I feel like he's gone. I'd trade him for whatever you can get.

There’s something weird going on behind the scenes that we don’t know about. Re-signing him seems like the obvious move but Masai calls him selfish and won’t even mention his name in a phone call to Quickley.

Then you’ve got Leo on TSN talking about how its time to move on which is something he’s never done before. Almost like he’s preparing the fanbase for a trade.

Simple, if either I don't want to pay him max money or if I get a sign that he doesn't want to be back then I am trading him before the deadline to avoid losing him for nothing.

Edit: I don't think he wants the 4 year extension like people ITT are saying.

See if he’s willing to sign 45M AAV but only after the trade deadline. Up until then keep exploring trade opportunities

Trade. Too many cooks in the kitchen.

I should add I currently do not believe that Masai is getting a crap platter for him, I think it's all smoke from teams who aren't serious and trying to drive price down.

The way Jack and Matt don't talk about him anymore is very telling. Of course they'll still praise him here and there but it's not over-the-top like in previous seasons.
