Tom Gores needs to be removed as owner of the Pistons.

Post#1 » by zeebneeb » Thu Jan 11, 2024 1:11 am

359-625 since he took ownership in 2011.

He will not own his mistakes, and won't do anything to improve the team.

This is absolutely embarrassing tonight, against a 5-30 team.

I have never seen anything like this before, and quite frankly, no one else has either.

The Pistons could be completely reset tomorrow in an expansion draft, and have a better product out on the floor.

Fire Weaver. Fire Monty. Own your mistakes you turd.

I have had absolutely enough of this horsecrap product.

You've got to do a lot more than just have a bad team for a long time to get ousted as owner by the league. Sterling was a horrible owner for a very long time (23 years) and it took recordings of him being an overt racist and dropping N bombs to get pushed out.

So your saying we need to crowdfund private detectives to dig up some dirt?

Yeah man he’s been a **** owner, he just needs to sign the checks and not make personnel (players) decision, but he has over and over.

Funny thing, when we need a move made he sits in his hands, but it’s actually a move that only he can do, it’s not a don’t trade Drummond cause he don’t want to move, it’s a he can fire these guys, but he sits in his hands. He sucks.

He has put the wrong people in place. We've been terrible yet the valuation of the team has increased by over $2 billion on a $325 million purchase you can say he hit a huge jackpot in buying this team. And he's also made millions here and there from taking cash in trades, and from all those luxury tax payments from other owners. Zero chance he sells this team unless he feels like he could use that $3 billion to put into something else for a better return elsewhere.

Sadly he can’t, the nba isn’t going anywhere, so the valuation should keep going up year after year even if you’re the worst team ever, oh what a world we live in.

It's embarrassing how easily the Spurs can score on us using baseline cuts.

I actually like Gores as an owner. He’s made all the, at the time, right hires.

1. SVG was highly regarded. Most here were ecstatic when we got him.

2. Troy Weaver was supposedly a big reason for Presti’s success.

3. Casey was an above average coach

4. Monty was supposed to be an elite coach.

The problem is, what could go wrong has gone wrong.

1. SVG was a decent coach but didn’t know how to draft. Some say Blake was forced on him, but the Blake years as sad as it is, was probably our best team. He just flat whiffed on Luke over Mitchell and Stanley over Booker.

2. Casey all in did an average job with the talent he had. He didn’t set this franchise back. He just really didn’t have any real talent because Blake got hurt.

3. Weaver drafted an all time bust in Killian and has made some questionable trades. Nothing spectacular but also nothing incredibly awful that it would have a multi year effect. The problem is he bottomed out and we’re still at the bottom.

4. Last year at this time Monty would be a dream. Now, it’s been the worst results imaginable.

All in all, Gores has been willing to spend and I feel like cares about Detroit. He’s made the seemingly right moves but they just haven’t worked out. I’m not unhappy with him as our guy.

You can't be this bad without it being on purpose. You can't be thing bad and not have made drastic changes unless this is what you want. Gores is killing the fanbase, will go to the State and get denied to get funding for his own arena and look to move to Las Vegas.

It's yet another reason that Gores won't sell... Not because of wanting to move the team but because we're probably just a few years away from two new teams joining the league and they will likely each have to pay the league owners $100 million apiece so there will be an extra $200 million in his pocket just for letting two new teams join. It makes sense because those two new teams will take a share of the national TV money and everything, but just a bonus $200 million in 2 or 3 years from now is a nice additional little bonus in addition to the piles of money the team raises in valuation each year.

The whole organization has become a meme at this point. Players come here and quit trying probably.

Who should replace Tom Gores as owner, if he were removed? Anyone from the Detroit area?

That's not how NBA ownership works. Or really any ownership in the US. The NBA isn't going to force Gores out.

Now the fans? If they keep the "Sell the team" chants up every game and maybe make it a lot more personal? The guy has a massive ego. He honestly thinks the community loves him and is just upset about the losing. People need to make him feel unwelcome in not subtle ways.

Would have made more sense for Ishbia to buy the Pistons and California living Gores to buy PHX.

But that Durant deal did have a strong whiff of the Blake Griffin deal Gores forced here.

Really Dan Gilbert should sell the Cavs to LeBron and buy the Pistons given how much of downtown property he owns.

Thing is, the great people of New York tried this for decades and still haven't done much of anything to get Dolan out of ownership. If NY media and its folks have shamed the ownership for years and haven't budged an inch, what makes Detroit somehow more special that it could spur Gores to sell?

Detroit is an ant compared to the boot that is NY, so that is why I'm confident Gores is not going anywhere. While concurring with all the reasons that have been stated above

People need to strap in, it's going to get worse before it really improves

Keep in mind that the Pistons had a dithering owner during the '70s, and Davidson turned out ok (Bill, not Karen). Gores has certainly tried harder than Davidson did at the get-go, spent some real money, made decisions that weren't totally off the deep end. He's just sucked as far as making good decisions. He paid low, though, and the asset is paying out in a big way despite his subsequent suckitude, so why would he sell? He bought the Pistons a dozen or so years ago for $325 million, and I suspect it'd take $3.25 billion for him to sell (and|or maybe Platinum Equity having a bad run).

They haven't really. They boo a few times a year. I'm talking more like the guy isn't welcome at any bars and restaurants in the greater metro area and has fans tossing beer at him every time he shows his face.

Being a bad owner isn’t basis for removal unfortunately.

Unless he pulls a Donald Sterling I think we’re stuck.

With all due respect, how can you possibly say this after the utter BS he spewed getting on the fans for being upset because he's good in the community and saying that Williams and Weaver aren't going anywhere?

Hiring SVG as GM wasn't a bad move in hindsight, it was a bad move from the very beginning. I wasn't on RealGM at the time so I don't know what the sentiment was around here but many people voiced concerns about him assuming the GM role.
He also meddled saying how much he valued Drummond so he's off the trade list, meddled with the Blake Griffin move and, heck, just look at the results. 0 playoff wins in 15 years now, no other sports franchise can claim that outside of the Lions lol and the Browns and that's football where playoff wins are fewer and far between.

From a pure basketball perspective, he's been an abject failure as an owner. It's nice that he's willing to spend but when you constantly surround yourself with the wrong people and then you meddle when you start getting impatient (Monty being the most recent example) then YOU are the problem.
I haven't even touched on the Arm Tellem thing but I don't know how much bandwidth I have left to list all the things he's done wrong.
Of course you're entitled to your opinion so I should respect that but I'm shocked that any Pistons fan would be not unhappy with Gores as owner.

Sad but true. No scandals here. Just gross incompetence.
