Critical 2 weeks and no center - who do we turn to?

Post#1 » by Dalek » Fri Jan 12, 2024 6:24 pm

Toronto is currently 15-23 and has the next ten days or so without their starting center Jakob Poeltl.

Toronto's schedule
@Utah
Boston
Heat
Bulls
@Knicks
Grizzlies
Clippers

With no reinforcements we could easily go 1-6 pushing us to a 16-29 record towards the end of January. All those teams have size and are going to pose some serious defensive problems without a rim protector. Doug Smith recently hinted at a Biyombo reunion. He also said a decision would likely happen on Sunday when they return back from their trip. I am curious who people think would be a good ten day fit.

Don't know about you guys but I'm see us going 7-0 with IQ hitting a buzzer beater bouncing off the rim 5 times sending clippers home.

It will be Thad Young or Scottie at the 5.

Let Thad Young do it.

He's been getting $8M to sit on the bench for the better part of the last two years. No need to incur additional costs for this.

Why wouldn't we just use a rotation of Jontay and one of our many PFs?

It took them 3 years to replace Marc with Poeltl. I doubt they make any quick center pickups

Wasn't there a report that we'll sign someone to a 10 day on Sunday? I think the choice was either Biyombo or Gueye.

EDIT: Here you go
https://www.thestar.com/sports/raptors/raptors-insider-darko-bike-rides-the-return-of-biyombo-and-siakam-speculation/article_66de8d76-ad7d-11ee-b51d-1bfc267e977f.html

The Raptors are considering repatriating a fan favourite as a short-term roster fill-in.

Bismack Biyombo, waived by the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday, is in the mix for a 10-day contract to get the Raptors through a frontcourt roster crunch with Jakob Poeltl out for the foreseeable future.

According to team sources, the Raptors are weighing a veteran addition like Biyombo, who could play a few minutes right away, or a young player they develop.

Included on that short list would be Mouhamadou Gueye of the G League Raptors 905. The Raptors would need to sign Gueye to a 10-day deal since they have no NBA right to him but it’s a name that was being kicked around the Crypto.com Arena on Wednesday.

What the Raptors won’t do, however, is fill both the roster openings they have. They will leave one open until after the trade deadline in case there’s a two-for-one or three-for-two transaction they like.

The 10-day deal won’t be announced until Sunday — the Raptors won’t waste days on a Friday road game and the two off days before they play again.

Can we 10-day someone?
What an absolute failure and disaster this franchise is, ran by one of the most incompetent front offices in the league.

A couple people want to stay the course with Thad and Porter so I have added that option.

Personally, I think with seven games ahead, Thad cannot hold up and Porter is likely to regress a bit playing against these stronger teams. Also, Poeltl may not come back in two weeks. Any time people say indefinitely out, it is not a good sign about an ankle injury.

I think we need some size, otherwise playing small we will have to combat foul trouble and offensive boards.

Well, if we fall 10-13 games under .500 I wonder if that just kills the hopes for a post-season. It is a really tough stretch of games and while we are playing well, the defense has not been great - mainly because we have to gamble on double-teams and trapping which is leaving guys open.

I referenced that in the first post. Doug Smith mentioned Mo Gueye (215 lbs at best) and Biyombo being on a short list. I think a list implies there are other players to consider.

Him and Dennis together would be too much bag fumbling.
