The case for a linup change: Enter Mr. Grimes
I'd like to insert Grimes into the starting lineup in place of DDV.
We tell DDV he's playing great but we want him to be the microwave 6th man off the bench who will also have some ball-handling responsibilities with the 2nd unit.
Grimes is an elite young defender. Full stop. He's built to slow down guys like Irving and Tim Hardaway Jr. He's also a capable 40% 3pt shooter and he gets after it on loose balls. Remember what happened when we replaced Fournier with Grimes in the starting lineup? Explosion. Since OG isn't a ball stopper, Grimes will get plenty of open 3's with that lineup.
DDV still gets his minutes. Does Thibs has the cajones to "rock the boat" in a good way?
iHart / Randle / OG / Grimes / Brunson
Bench: DDV / McBride / Hart / Precious (until Mitch returns)

This is the change I expect, but I’d give Grimes another week or two off the bench first.

Yeah, he makes more sense with the starters if he's playing well. Thibs will probably make the change but with tortoise speed.

We just won 5 in a row and DD has been playing so well and you want to make a lineup change now? Makes no sense.

Grimes gotta earn it. This is not a team that caters to developing the young dudes anymore. If he can get back to last year, we’ll become super dangerous.

Donte is playing great with the starters and the chemistry is really good. Grimes is playing better off the bench. I would just leave the starters as is. Donte’s ball handling helps the starters too. If we replace with Grimes we only have 2 starters that basically dribble and handle.

He was actually handling a fair amount last night so I presume it's been impressed upon him that it's what he needs to do to expand his role. Dude just needs to shoot it when he's got the lane. He didn't take a single shot that wasn't a 3 and I saw like 3-4 times where he had a decent look inside the FT line and he passed it off to the corners. Dallas, having read the scouting report, anticipated this and immediately closed out and we had to swing it around more, sometimes to the advantage, sometimes not. He needs to start taking those, at least part of the time, because he has a floater and can finish and teams expect him to pass. Dude's like a reverse RJ.

He is playing better and starting to come out of his shell. I think he can get there, but I am not sure he is there yet. The hesitation in his game is still there, although getting better. It’s a good question and maybe could work out for the better, but I would let Grimes gain some more confidence off the bench for a little more.
Plus, the chemistry the starting lineup has (barring last game), may be the best I have seen from a Knicks team in awhile. Some of the plays Donte makes I can’t really see Grimes making right now. Donte is playing at a different speed with all the quick decisions, shot making, passes, cuts….the Jay Wright years w Brunson and experience in the nba are paying off. It’s perfect for the starters.

That's key for me. I like Grimes more with the starting lineup because I think his defensive advantage would help more than DDV's playmaking advantage, while the situation is flipped with the bench lineups, but we have time for this to play out before the deadline.
That nova-ESP and just how hot DDV has been are legit points, but having that with the Deuce-Hart-Julius-iHart lineups would be nice too.

I’m against a lineup change when the team’s playing so well.

Yeah, I understand people not wanting to rock the boat but I think it would provide a good balance between offense and defense for the first and second unit. The second unit could use a more experienced guard. I also don't want to put OG in the same crappy position that Grimes was put in to start the year except OG is being asked to guard 1 through 5 instead of 1 through 3. Asking one player to constantly guard the best player at all times with limited involvement in the offense can be grinding. I feel like we are going to run him into the ground asking him to chase around small guards, slow down wings and bang with bigs for 36+ minutes every game. OG does have a history of injuries. It would be nice to give him a little bit of a break on the defensive end.
I hope Thibs takes this time before the trade deadline to be a little more experimental with his lineups so we can see what we truly have. If it doesn't work you can always put DDV back in the starting lineup.

That's my era right there. They were good for the time but, I wasn't a huge fan. I was a big fan of Rakim/De La Soul/Cool G Rap/Big Daddy Kane/KRS-1/Public Enemy/Slick Rick/3rd Bass/K Solo/LL Back in those days. Nice and Smooth. Beastie Boys. It was a wild time to be alive. The crack/AIDS epidemics were in full swing. Then we shifted into the gang wars and West Coast rap started making noise. Cypress Hill/NWA/Dre/Snoop/Ice Cube solo albums. Then I stopped keeping up.

Hmmm: Ham Burger or Perry Mason? Judge Thibs to decide.
