Should we try to keep our 1st rd pick in 2024

Post#1 » by SpezNc » Sat Jan 13, 2024 11:04 pm

Should we try to keep our 1st rd pick in 2024

So far we are 7th worse in standing
Pick is only top6 protected
We have +/- one third (+/- 33%) of chance to keep our current pick
Odds will be higher if we can drop a bit in ranking (or at least by one spot)
With a winning streak , our odds to keep the pick may easily fall below 20%
At the end of the day, do we want to keep our pick this year (underwhelming draft but it’s looking like mid lottery pick)
We currently have DET second RD pick= likely pick 31 to 33 in next draft.
Unless we remove protection, until the pick is transferred we have less 1st rd pick available for trade

I WILL RESET THE POLL AND ADD A FOURTH OPTION : Yes & Keep pick in 2024-25-26 & giving SA 2nd rounders

Current result before the reset

YES : 10 votes 26%
NO: 25 votes 66%
Undecided : 3 votes 8%

It comes to if the top 6 prospects in 2024 will be far better than, say top 12 in 2025.

Every draft has its surprises, but not always among the top picks. Right now, this draft looks very weak, with a lot of projects and an $11 million starting salary for the top pick. If the Raptors trade Pascal, or lose him in free agency, we might be a candidate for top pick in 2025 - I'd rather have a long shot lottery pick at Cooper Flagg than anyone so far showing at the top of mock drafts in 2024.

Even if the pick is not transferred this year, there is still top6 protection for next year.

Meaning we can still keep both 1st pick 2024 and 2025 if we are bad enough / lucky with lottery

I think I’m content with a win now mood with youth if we trade pascal. I’m also good with Detroit’s 2nd as we can go BPA and grab a developmental piece on a cheap 3 year contract.
I believe in Masai.

For the sake of the picks and value it would be good to have it turn into two seconds. For the sake of the franchise and the enjoyment of winning - let’s get it over with this year.

That's true, but I wouldn't build my strategy around that.

I’d rather reach the play in and hopefully the playoffs and just convey a mid-late teens pick in a weaker draft and have full control of the 2025 pick either for our own selection or as an asset if we want to pursue any other upgrades next season

OMG

My bad. It was too see if people were following :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Using the polls choices (instead of looking at the Q) would be the right way to answer the Q.

Well if you're hoping for Cooper Flagg he would be the top pick next year and the pick is also top 6 protected next year, so why not both?

It’s still arkward but I just add a “NOT” to the question in order to avoid reset the results.

if we keep our pick this year, I think it will probably be better than the pick we will realistically get in the next draft. And in any case, we have Cooper Flagg insurance on the pick if things really go haywire.

why isn't there an option for keeping both 2024 and 2025 FRP?

Change it to, “Should we try to keep our 1st rd pick in 2024”

Because part of the rational to want to keep our pick this season would be that theoretically we can still keep 2025 pick as well.

But I can also add that option and just reset the polls results.
