like i said though, i can't remember a deal that looked like this. i guess gobert was mostly all picks but they did give up kessler. and vanderbilt was kind of young.
Have you been paying any attention? Grimes makes 2.5 million next year. He's not getting us any star players. You combine him and Evan/filler/light pick package for DJM for example. Now we have salary AND a better player to trade for a star in the future. That's the logical plan behind this. This years picks will not be used for any star trades because none are available.
at this point DJM doesn't look realistic because ATL wants picks (seems like they aren't interested in protected picks). So that ship seems to have sailed with us trading IQ to TOR.
Knicks pick this season will likely be around 20-25. So that is not a pick we should be too worried about surrendering in the right trade (especially with the Dallas pick likely to be in the same range).
Trading another one in two years is also likely not to represent a huge risk, assuming you are getting a long-term piece that takes your team to the next level.
Detroit will have roughly $60m in cap room next summer, so they are likely to throw big money at free agents. It is entirely possible that they will get significantly better next season (and thus that their pick conveys to us).
The question is: do you trust management to make these kinds of decisions? I am beginning to have my doubts.
