Raptors Trade Deadline Discussion Thread

Post#1 » by LoveMyRaps » Thu Jan 18, 2024 6:34 am

The major moves have been made, setting off a ripple effect that may lead to additional trades before the February 8th deadline. With the big names already dealt, we can now shift our attention towards trading the some of the other guys on the team.

Bruce Brown is expected to generate interest across the league and we could potentially acquire a first round pick for him which would be terrific.

I also expect Schroder to be a popular name in the coming weeks.
Lakers are in the market for a point guard and may be down for a reunion.

Masai has 4 draft picks (3 first and 1 second) and lots of expiring contracts to play around.

I think he wants young players with upside who fits the BBQ timeline, so who is going to be available?

Cavs are balling without Garland. I wonder if there is a timeline where the Cavs would have been players for Siakam and traded Garland for him. Probably not because they view Garland as their future guard but they look great with Mitchell being the top dog that dominates the ball. Or if we offered Siakam and a bunch of assets for Mobley, whose value is probably never going to be lower with his stagnant production and injury.

Get Grimes. 23 years old. 38% career 3 PT shooter. Plays decent defense. Has issues with being passive / confidence issues. Is underperforming/struggling in the Brunson/Randle offense.

List of PF/Cs 25 and under maybe available

Wendell Carter jr
Patrick Williams
Santi Aldama
Onyeka Okongwu (Prolly untouchable)
Nick Richards
PJ Washington
John Collins
Lauri Markkanen (Ainge would prolly want Barnes for him lol)
Isaiah Hartenstein
Jonathan Isaac
Nick Claxton (Prolly not available but maybe a F/A option)
Isaiah Stewart
Tari Eason
Aleksej Pokusevski
Naz Reid

We clearly need a future big man considering our big man rotation as of today is Boucher/Thad/ Jakob/Jontay i guess Barnes is also in there at the PF position but i don't really consider him a big man....

We have the ability to trade the following
Jakob (Already said he doesn't want to be part of a rebuild & does not fit the BBQ timeline)
GTJR
Schroder
Brown Jr
Thad
Porter Jr
Temple
(All these players don't fit the BBQ timeline except for GTJR who is an up and coming Free agent)

Which big man should we try and go after? i know the list is not very flashy....Or do we just wait until the up coming draft and stock pile on big men there and trade all these vets for Draft capital?

I don't understand why Masai didn't at least get Jalen Smith from Indiana? He can shoot the 3 and fits the BBQ timeline perfectly.

Maybe we can go after him in the offseason?

This would be my target....I know hes been injury prone and seems a little out of shape this season but if we can get him right and let him grow with BBQ and Dick....He is still only 24 years old and would be hitting his prime same time as our young guys ...We need a big man to grow with this team...

What would be his price though?

Are there any other 4th year guys like IQ who are stuck behind someone and the team doesn't want to pay them?

WJC is fine if you only want a guy to play 35 games each season.

If the Raps can just tread water at the position for another week or so until Poeltl is back, I think they'll be ok until the end of the year. Then they could try to address it in free agency where there are a few interesting guys that will be available as UFAs, including Claxton, Daniel Theis, and my favourite option - Isaiah Hartenstein, who the Knicks might have a hard time re-signing if they also have to shell out big bucks for OG.

The Timberwolves are also going to be in a tough salary crunch as early as next season, so the summer might be the best time to try to pry Naz Reid from them. They just re-signed him this past summer and seem committed to seeing how far their current roster can take them this year, especially given how well they've been doing, but reality will bite them sooner rather than later.

He played 62/57 in the last 2 years....Yeah thats still not a full season....But hes only 24 still and has the most upside from the big men available atm....Curry early on in his career was also called "Injury prone"....Theres always a chance he gets a little healthier in his mid 20s....Its a risk but if it pays off you have a C locked for the next 5-7 years...

Reason i am rooting for WCJ is also his game would fit Barnes/IQ/Barrett so well....A pick and pop C with a mid range/3pt game and also a big rebounder.

Barrett
3 1sts
Early second
Brown
Nwora

Interested to see how we now turn Schroder, brown etc into more future assets.

I think Brown will be kept. Someone is needed to relief Barnes from the heaviest defensive load. Otherwise, Barnes will probably be needed to defend the other´s team best player every night, and this may hurt his offensive development.

But we also need a backup big, especially with Koloko gone.

Also, I am not sold we are going to suck this year. We just lost a close game to a Celtics team shooting 4-for-32 for three and cooked Miami. Despite our record, I think there is a clear improvement post-OG trade. Pascal just was not thinking in Raptors anymore and was a complete liability on defense in the last days, and without this weak link on defense, we looked competent again in this area against Miami.

I think we should sell capspace, like OKC did, even because we suck at FA. Receive players other teams do not want with attached picks/prospects as compensation. This way, we do not need necessarily to sell players to receive prospects, but we probably will need roster space anyway to receive new players.

I wouldn't put that much stock in that Miami game...We shot historic level good and gave them the biggest half time deficit in franchise history....It was just one of them nights where everything was going well....

Will this team be good enough to make the playin....i still have my doubts...i think it sucks either way because we will be in a dog fight to keep our pick and also in a dog fight to make the playoffs...i see us hovering around the 7-10 range in the draft which means we need to get lucky on lottery night and leap frog some teams to keep our pick.

Yes, but despite the shoot at historic level, which I agree, cannot be done every night, we held them to 97 points - 43 at the half.

Also, we had a good west trip with close games. The Raptors are playing much better since OG trade. The main question is if without an unmotivated Siakam we can keep the rhythm.

Without Siakam there I think we're going to see a lot more "4th Quarter Scottie". There' going to be no falling back on Pascal. It's not always going to be pretty but development wise this is going to be huge for Scottie.
