From who and what was the return exactly?

Outside of the Durant and Irving deals there was a lot of crap being dealt for multiple 2nd rounders.

Lot's of fans are talking as if there were a mountain of assets available for Bobby and Masai to choose from. Masai has never been gun shy about making tough choices and deals, but he doesn't make deals if the value isn't equitable.

That’s not really saying much because no GM in their right mind would make deal if the value to them isn’t at least equitable. It’s not just Masai.

We don’t have complete information on all the trade negotiations so we are all just guessing, but the general point is valid that the shorter the duration till a contract expires means the (trade) value becomes less (i.e., as XTC said, we could have gotten more last season). This is akin to time value decay principle of an option financial derivative declining in value the closer it gets to its expiration date.

If we're grading the trade specifically: B

If we're grading the handling of the Pascal situation: C

So a B-/C+ overall grade.

Doubt the average is above 90

If you zoom in, getting 3 1st round picks (possibly 4 if they move Brown) for a rental is a pretty good return. I can't remember the last rental that went for that much, even if the 1sts are projected to be lower picks.

If you zoom out, they probably traded him a year or two late. Siakam with 1.5 years on his contract is more valuable than Siakam with .5 years on his contract. How much more do they get last year? Maybe another mid tier asset asset or two. I still don't believe a team like Sac or Atl are giving up players the caliber of Keegan or JJ at that time either because high upside young players on rookie deals are rarely traded, and when they are it isn't for mid tier stars in their 30s looking for 50 mill a season.

Overall, I'm pretty content with the deal and now I hope we can build properly around Scottie with the newly added assets.

It really sucks that we couldn't get any one of the young assets Indiana possesses.

We also have a glaring hole at the PF position right now. The days of PG Scottie are gone, he'll probably be our PF for the foreseeable future because we have no other options.
Im not directing this specifically to you but all I've heard the least 2+ years is scottie and pascal can't play together and they occupy the same space on the floor...now there's a glaring hole at the 4?

...Wut.

I loved the Scottie & Pascal duo. I always believed the two could co-exist.

But to your point, Scottie did look great as our starting PF today - maybe he's our Siakam replacement moving forward. A point forward that can work in the paint, stretch the floor, and always create for others.

They could've if Yak was a 3/D center but he was also clogging up the paint, and the team lacked shooting. Siakam worked well with Gasol/Ibaka, centers who could also shoot, even JV wasn't bad and could stretch the floor.

We have in effect acquired whatever young promising guy you can get for 3 firsts, 2 seconds and a bunch of add-ons. The deal isn't done yet, because we are holding currency. When the currency gets converted back to assets then consider what young prospect you acquired in the deal. It would be a mistake to go to the draft with as many picks as we have. We've going to convert some of our capital into assets at some point soon. Be patient and enjoy shopping. Good young players don't often hit the market, but we were early to sell so we can be ready to get involved in any deal involving talent leaving the tanking teams.

Would grade the trade a B-.

We traded him at least one year later than we should. Less time left on his contract equals less value for other teams and more uncertainty whether he will stay long term. No team was going to surrender a young emerging talent on a cost controlled contract - certainly not for a player on an expiring contract and who btw they could even potentially sign outright in the offseason.

Having said that, three mid to late first round picks and Bruce Brown is a decent haul given the predicament the front office was in. They also got another second round pick from the Pelicans for taking on Kira’s contract off their hands.
