Team Doc vs Team Pop vs Team KD vs Team LeBron

Post#1 » by Saints14 » Thu Jan 25, 2024 1:33 pm

The vast majority of top talent of the few decades have played for or with these hall of famers, with only a little overlap. Who would you take?

Feel free to modify any player years (as long as they overlap with the coach/player) or swap out any players I might have forgotten.

Edit: Completely forgot that Doc coached the Kawhi/PG Clippers for a year. I voted for Pop but that might put team Doc over the edge for me.

Team Doc - arguably the deepest with star talent, but are they at a coaching disadvantage?

2016 CP3
2008 Ray Allen
2020 Kawhi
2008 KG
2023 Embiid

Bench: 2024 Giannis, 2003 T-Mac, 2024 Lillard, 2008 Pierce, 2014 Blake, 2022 Harden, 2020 Paul George

Coach: Doc Rivers

Team Pop - arguably the greatest coach of all time with the legends of Spurs lore all in their prime

2007 Parker
2014 Danny Green
2017 Kawhi
2003 Duncan
1998 Robinson

Bench: 2005 Ginobili, 2018 Aldridge, 2019 DeRozan, 2021 Dejounte Murray, 2024 Wembanyama, 2005 Robert Horry, 2014 Diaw

Coach: Gregg Popovich

Team KD - arguably the greatest team of all time infused with hall-of-fame guard talent

2016 Westbrook
2017 Curry
2017 Thompson
2017 KD
2017 Draymond

Bench: 2024 Booker, 2021 Harden, 2021 Kyrie, 2017 Iguodala, 2021 Jarrett Allen, 2015 Ibaka, 2019 Kevon Looney

Coach: Steve Kerr

Team LeBron - arguably the greatest player of all time with the best of his all-star supporting cast over the years

2017 Kyrie
2011 Wade
2016 LeBron
2020 Davis
2013 Bosh

Bench: 2016 Love, 2009 Mo Williams, 2013 Ray Allen, 2020 Howard, 2013 Battier, 2017 Korver, 2020 KCP

Coach: Erik Spoelstra

Doc easily even without the bench. Also could take on Phil

Doc has the best talent, but he's by far the worst coach of the bunch. He would make no meaningful adjustments in a series against the others. He's most known for not maximizing the value he has had to worth with. This team flames out badly in a hypothetical series.

1972 Walt Frazier
1991 Michael Jordan
1996 Scottie Pippen
1969 Willis Reed
2000 Shaquille O'Neal

Bench: 1994 BJ Armstrong, 2009 Kobe Bryant, 1972 Dave DeBusschere, 1992 Horace Grant, 2010 Pau Gasol, 1996 Dennis Rodman, 1972 Jerry Lucas

I'd take this team over Pop, KD and LeBron's teams but it's kind of crazy this team still can't match Doc's depth of superstars despite pulling from 3 different teams that all won multiple titles.

Yeah I thought about including Phil but decided to keep it to guys still in the league, plus I thought that MJ/Kobe/Shaq/Pippen would run away with it (maybe not though).

I also wonder where "Team Other" would fit in, including players over the past 20 years who never played for/with any of the above guys plus Phil - it gets pretty slim with top level talent. I don't think I'd take them over Team Doc or Team Pop, and maybe not over team KD either because while Jokic’s defense in space is good enough in the regular NBA, it could get obliterated playing against peak GSW + Westbrook + Harden + Booker + Irving. The offense would be pretty insane though:

Team Other: best of the rest

2022 Luka
2023 Butler
2023 Tatum
2011 Dirk
2023 Jokic

Bench: 2006 Nash, 2011 Rose, 2013 Melo, 2017 Lowry, 2022 Gobert, 2021 Jrue Holiday, 2018 Victor Oladipo

CP3/TMac/Kawhi/Blake/Embiid have to be the most unreliable team healthy wise coming playoffs

Team LeBron is underrated here. Davis and Bosh provide spacing, length and a very mobile defense. Wade and Davis pick and roll would be unstoppable and we have SO MANY SHOOTERS and defenders around peak LeBron James. Would be very tough to stop this team once they start rolling because they have so many drive, inside buckets and shooting threats going at the same time and the defense is very good except for Kyrie who can be hidden.
