Suggs’ extension
He and Franz are eligible for extensions this summer (that will kick in after next season). In recent history, most relevant rookies get extended or it’s seen as a sign of uncertainty about their future with the team. There are exceptions, like Maxey, who is obviously playing along with with Morey’s master plan for contention. Suggs’ defense, heart, and leadership are priceless but an overpay, with max or near max deals looming for Paolo & Franz, could basically lock up the ORL core “as-is”…which would be a disaster, imo. This is a risky business - when your (distant) third best player is showing great flashes of stardom, but is also getting hurt often, possibly hitting a ceiling as a role player, might be largely replaceable by a lesser but cheaper young player, etc etc. the vision of Suggs’ ceiling still is very unclear…DPOY ? All-Star? role player off the bench? chronically injured? sixth man? All are conceivable
What will Suggs get? This is a significant negotiation.

Re: Suggs’ extension
This is a great question. He's shown amazing defensive potential, inconsistent offense, and has been plagued by injuries. I think he'll extend for something like $56M/4 years, $14M AAV.

No way in hell he signs for so little. He is a 39% shooter from 3 this year on a decent volume and an elite defender who will probably get a an All-Defense team nod. He is also missed only 4 gamees so far. Anything below 20 mln. per year would be a bargain for us.

The way the cap is rising, I think he's probably in the 4/80 range.

Re: Suggs’ extension
I went with a 110% raise. Seems reasonable to me, with a player option in there.Bergmaniac wrote:eyriq wrote:This is a great question. He's shown amazing defensive potential, inconsistent offense, and has been plagued by injuries. I think he'll extend for something like $56M/4 years, $14M AAV.

Suggs getting at least 100m , don’t know the years.

I'm not convinced of this.
He'll get more than Cole, but I don't think he'll get double Cole.

Re: Suggs’ extension
How different is his impact on the game from Alex Caruso? I'd start there, they are both oft injured, excellent defensive guards that can shoot.

Thats very good argument. If we take age, next tv deal and Caruso being underpaid i would say someting in the 15-20M range depending how he closes the year.
ps. Cole looking more and more overpaid. Thank god its 2+1 with team option.
My money is on Banchero going number 1 !

I'd figure 15-20 mil, maybe a lil higher with incentives about health & team performance

I wouldn't be mad at that. Say something like 4/75.

this SHOULD be a very realistic take...he could well be worth $20m per, IF he continues on his trajectory of offensive improvement. The way his shooting % has improved is astronomical, year to year...but also smallish sample size. Do you base this on his expected improvement or where he's at? (and what does his agent say? you don't want it to get contentious, but...).
I expect $18m x 4, but hopefully as front-loaded as possible. Over that is a real risk for a guy that might be an oft-injured defensive role player...under that could be a steal or even an offensive offer. He's GOT to be a solid #3 or #4 on a playoff threat starting lineup to deserve more than 20, imo. There are plenty of examples of stiffs making that much and they're all regrettable deals.
right now...he's a distant #3 on a team not certain to make the playoffs at all. So much promise, but much of the buzz is intangible stuff which is hard to value.

He’s probably looking at that OG/De’Andre Hunter kind of money.

Highly doubt it, he's injury prone and inconsistent overall. I think it will be between 50-65ish.

This trade wasn't some conspiracy - it was just a GM wanting AD bad enough where in most people's eyes he overpaid by a long shot to get him.

Whats the MAX that a rookie deal extension is allowed? I think he takes maybe 60% of that.

I think if he’s offered an extension below that amount he gambles on himself to show he’s worth it the following season before RFA. On a team with cap space and only 2 stars (neither on max deals yet) it’s gonna be hard to tell him he’s worth less than $20M a season.
I wouldn’t bet against Suggs long term, I’d bet on him.

Re: Suggs’ extension
easily 20+ mill/yr. we just saw Jaden Mcdaniels get 27 mill/yr.
3&D players get paid, and he's easily one of the best guard defenders in the league while shooting almost 40% from 3.
