Re: Trade Talk (Part 14): 2023-24 Edition
Anyone see the report we were interested in Royce O'Neal also?
I also forgot that Burks did spend time with Rudy in Utah, so if we have interest they must have gotten along well. He didn't play with Conley though.
We'd have to get creative to get Morris and Burks. They make just barely too much for the Anderson, Shake, Brown contracts. We could add Moore but we'd need to sign a couple guys as well.

I might be mistaken, but I personally want Royce O'Neal over Burks. Royce was a consistent perimeter defender in UTA: hustle, physical, great hands, great contest, discipline, helped Rudy a lot. He is not a ballhandler, nor slasher, but he is 38% career 3PT shooting AND he knows how to use Rudys rim gravity and he knows how to get open. He also is not a high level passer, but he makes that simple pass to open 3pt shooter in corner and knows how to feed big.
There is only one problem. Last night Finch tried Gobert-Towns/Reid-Anderson-Milton-McLaughlin lineup. IMO he wanted more pace and more ballhandling, plus Milton looked good before, but disregarded how bad spacing with Gobert-Anderson-Milton-McLaughlin. If Finch does not play TBJ, who is a similar to O'Neal, why would Finch play O'Neal? In my opinion if we trade Anderson, we should put more spacing and make decision making for Towns, Edwards as easy as possible. In other words, if Connelly somehow can turn Anderson and SRPs into O'Neal we should run bench unit like this:
Reid-McDaniels-O'Neal-TBJ-Edwards. Guess how much better Edwards passing will be?
P.S. Couple of notes: first, I think Gobert-Towns/Reid-Anderson-Milton unit with Monte Morris would be bad in offense as well. Second, McDaniels progress has been a disappointment. And the problem that is not often mentioned here is that Anderson is Finch's "break glass in case of emergency" tools when MIN need a versatile defender, passer, ballhandler. Too bad McDaniels has not stepped up yet, which complicates any Anderson trade where we dont get a wing.

I was thinking the infamous Gobert/Naz/Anderson/Milton/McLaughlin line up would turn inot Gobert/Ried/TBJ/Burks/Morris. If we get lucky with buy-out for Burks and trade for Bojan/Morris. Maybe even Gobert/Naz/Bojan/Burks/Morris.

MCDaniels is not even close to being untouchable. His offensive is less reliable than his ability to pick up a foul. I would happily include him in a deal that brings back a more experienced vet who can space more and defend decently enough without fouling.

not possible to trade him until next summer with the poison pill because of his extension
counts as $3.9 mil for Wolves as outgoing salary
incoming team he counts as $22.5 mil
no way to make the matching salary work

I think we’ll have a tame trade deadline.
Troy Brown Jr + Shake Milton + $2 mil cash + 2026 bad 2nd for Monte Morris
WMJ + $2 mil cash for cap space
Sign 2 Vet Min guys (@ $767,488)
OUT: $11.42
IN: $11.33
Still safely under the lux, even if Mike Conley gets his $1.5 mil bonus.

The 767,488 how many years of experience is that?

2 or more. While the actual vet min salary may be greater for more experienced players, the CBA has always held the actual cap hit to be that of a two year vet, to encourage teams to sign NBA vets that fans may know and like.

I would still try and trade Kyle for Royce. I think it would be a good fit. The Nets are trying to play 3s and the 4 and the Wolves are trying to play 4s at the 3. I think it would be good for both teams and I also believe Royce will be cheaper in the offseason. I really think if Kyle stays in Minn and has a good postseason, he would be this year's Bruce Brown -where he gets paid way more than people think.

I'd be happy with either. Royce can fill Andersons defense while trading ballhandling for more shooting. Burks would add shooting along with an ability to create his own shot, but a defense trade off.
Getting 2 guys would be aggressive, but I'd love to see it. There's still a chance someone like Hayward or Lowry would get bought out as well. I think we could for sure use shooting, a bigger wing, and someone who can create a shot.

So ideally
Conley/Ant/MCD/KAT/Rudy
Morris/NAW/Hayward/Kyle/Naz
JMAC/Minott/Miller/Marcus Morris
Where Morris battles Kyle for rotation minutes

Marcus Morris is worse than SlowMO.
I actually think in a playoff setting, the minutes where SlowMo is best served is when he shares the court with Towns at Center.
Something like SlowMo/NAW/McDaniels/Naz/KAT line-up. Big, tons of defense, and tons of spacing.
The line-ups that don't work are JMac/SlowMo and SlowMo/Gobert in the post-season, where spacing becomes erased.

Which is why Morris is in the 3rd string.

We will be competing with OKC and PHI for the top buy out candidates that make more than the MLE, and all contenders for those that make less.
Also, keep in mind that there aren’t any franchise saviors on the buy out market. If they were very good, they’d be traded, or at least teams would ask them to help and finish the season. If we are lucky, we might get a tenth man, but only 1-2 of these buy out guys in NBA history have ever contributed significantly in the playoffs.

True. But, Hayward and Marcus Morris would both be all upside for us. Hayward gives us the shooting we crave, and Marcus Morris the floor spacing PF who could play with Rudy when Kyle is bad.

I really think in the postseason, Towns, Rudy and KAT are going to get the vast majority of 4-5 minutes. I would want a wing or a shooter in the buyout market. I think even someone like Fournier could get more playing time with Finch than Marcus Morris or Hayward. Sign me up for McDermott. He would be a good fit and I think he might even sign for the minimum to come back next year.

Towns and KAT are the same person. Did you mean Naz for one of those or did you just mean Rudy and KAT?

Chris Paul and Gordon Hayward.
If they were healthy at the end of the season (big if), both have the potential and experience to play significant rotation minutes in a game of two in a series. Generally buy-out players are “more name than game,” but I think either has the chance to make a difference.

Good choices but I don't think Paul will be available. GSW will try to get in the play-in. Right or wrong, they are confident about knocking off a 1 or 2 seed
Return to Minnesota Timberwolves
