I agree except to note that it’s actually a very useful heuristic that tends to hold true 99.9% of the time. It just so happens that Jalen appears to be in that 00.1% with (but not quite at) Steph.

Is it really a stereotype if it’s statistically true? Guys built like Jalen or like Steph have not seen this kind of success very often. Almost never, actually. If your job is NBA scouting, then that kind of statistical probability isn’t a “stupid stereotype,” it’s just one factor you need to consider. On the other end, we’ve sure seen enough Olowokandis and Sam Bowies to know that large size isn’t a guarantee either.

I think it goes the other way -- even little guys are judged for athleticism much more. Bayless comes to mind. Bust.

The big guys also get overrated merely for being big. And big and athletic even better.

The common thread here is overvaluing physical measurements. Whether little or big, jumping valued too much. It's not all wrong of course. I don't know what his wingspan is but Precious seems very long armed and I feel that does improve his ceiling.

But the point is, the hype (not team scouting) often comes from non-athletes, who put a lot of stock in measuring this or that.

You're justifying a stance from several years ago. People today are still not seeing how good The People's MVP is even as he busts their ass right in front of them. That's what this is referring to. It's wild. If an NBA scout is watching today and saying Brunson isn't good enough to lead a team they need to be fired. Really, after the 2022 playoffs.

Or maybe just get their vision checked because they’d have to be literally blind to say that.

It’s semantics. I’m just saying the heuristic isn’t “stupid” because 99.9% of the time it’s accurate. We just happen to have won the lottery with the 00.1% exception to the basic rule. By everything we know historically about successful NBA players, Jalen Brunson shouldn’t exist. But here he is and nobody can deny it any more.

Amin even sidesteps it. He's playing like Steph Curry. Different style. Similar impact.

I agree lol. People still saying it about JB is super dumb. But if he was a little taller or more athletic, they wouldn't say it. A part of why people say they see really high upside in IQ is that he looks more athletic. Not even sure he IS more athletic, but he's a little prettier I guess. Thinner, longer body.

Much is deceiving in the NBA. Wingspan to me is pretty big for a big. Athleticism gets wasted a lot.

How would one even start evaluating a guy like Mitch for his physical attributes? There's no formula. The reason he's effective at certain things is that he's big and can move a little going after boards. He also lacks coordination and speed in a way that makes him fatally flawed. Measuring or evaluating on size / speed is pretty limited.

To me, the only relevant contemporary comp to Brunson is not a small guard at all. It’s actually Jokic.

Nobody can say what Brunson’s ceiling is right now. Who the F knows how much better he can get, but I see a lot of similarities between him and Joker — second round picks turned All-NBA based on footwork and brainpower despite a lack of conventional athleticism — and am hoping it pans out the same.
