Your Top Young Realisitic Trade/Free Agent Targets For Raptors?

Post#1 » by Tor_Raps » Thu Feb 1, 2024 4:14 am

We are in a clear rebuild and are in desperate need for an influx of young talent to add to this team. Inspired by the Raptors Trade Thread where Jalen Green's name is being tossed around based on some tweets, who would you want Masai to target if you had a choice?

We will have plenty of cap space this offseason and could have even more depending on what we do with some vets who do hold some value around the league in Schroder/Brown/Trent and to a much lesser extent Boucher/Thad. So we can try to get this player(s) via trade or through free agency.

Let's hear some names and how you'd want to realistically target them.

we need picks, not players

Once Poeltl, IQ and RJ come back guys like Dick and Nwora won't even get mins.

But we are probably going to trade Brown/Schroder/Boucher and maybe Trent to help open up that playing time.

Masai has already said he doubts he even uses all 2024 draft picks so there's a good chance we begin to target actual young players and not just picks.

I'll be disappointed if we don't find a way to shake Omax Prosper off the Mavericks. Really need to find a way to replace what OG provided, and he's one of the best prospects who can fit that mould one day.

I'd love to entice Trey Murphy off the Pelicans, but understandably they may love him too much. That being said, Pelicans are going to have to do something major soon if they want to address some of their deep flaws and if they want to stay out of tax hell.

Come offseason, guys like Nic Claxton and Malik Monk could provide the support to fast track the rebuild.

SA wants their pick first. That limits what we can do.

Holes to fill assuming Poeltl stays here in the near future:

Poeltl / 3+D center
Star prospect (SF/PF or PF/C) / back-up PF
Scottie / Nwora / back-up wing
RJ Barrett / Grady
Quickley / back-up guard

In order in terms of need:

1. Two-way star player, preferably at SF/PF rather than SG, so we can keep some size in the starting line-up. Although I guess it doesn't matter that much as long as we get a star. BBQ has limited upside imo

2. 3 + D starting center that eventually replaces Poeltl in the SL

3. Back-up PG who can defend and play minutes at SG

4. Back-up PF (higher IQ better 3 point shooting version of Boucher, I wonder if Jontay can log minutes at PF)

5. Back-up defensive wing. May need a higher level role player if Nwora/Grady don't work out.

We need OG back badly but not the pre-trade deadline OG but the locked-in version. Scottie cannot be the best defender, help defender, center help and all that and then expected to have stamina to produce on the offensive end.

If OG is not an option, we need a wing defender that can give Scottie some breathing room on defense.

After we trade off guys (OG, Gary, Thad, Otto,Temple, Nwora, Bruce) to high end playoff teams, we sign them in the off-season, and bring in all that newly obtained knowledge.

He might be a bust but it would seem Davion Mitchell has fallen out of favour in Sac. They took the ball out of his hands as soon as Monk arrived and he never recovered. Unclear what they'd want but bet they'd let him go for cheap. He could be a long-term answer at back up PG, and if not oh well.

The only young player I wanna trade for realistically would be Lauri. Other than that I'd just see how this draft plays out.
Summer time I'm noteven sure what to do in FA either, if we can get Claxton for under 25 I wouldn't mind that either. He fits our timeline & gives us a PnR lob threat.

I think this is spot on.

I think we need to see what we get from our deadline sell off. Does Bruce Brown become another late 1st this year? What happens with GTJ, Schroeder, Boucher?

Until we know what assets we have it's hard to know how to fill out needs.

Fantasy land we land top 3.
#1 Draft Risacher as a Keegan Murray type SF.
#2 Draft Kel'el Ware as your stretch 5
#3a Try and use remaining 1st, Detroit 2nd and whatever
we glean from trade deadline to trade up for Castle.
#3b sign De'Anthony Melton
#4 Sign Jalen Smith
#5 sign Saddiq Bey

I think it make sense to combine some assets to move up and select a player we really like as opposed to selecting upwards of 5 rookies. I'd rather grab 3 higher rated then shotgun with alot of low picks. That's relative to what happens on draft night, maybe you don't need to do that and still grab the guys you rate highly.

Result:
Yak, Ware/J Smith
Barnes, J Smith
Risacher, Bey, Nwora
RJ, Dick/Castle/Melton
IQ, Castle/Melton

Obviously, we could also see a Salaun PF pick, coupled with a Filopowski trade up for a stretch 5, etc.
Lots of combos work.

Really depends where our picks sit and who drops on draft night. I think it will be even more unpredictable this year with the flat talent/weak draft.

I think Smith, Melton and Bey are realistic targets in FA and RFA as their current teams might not have the room to match a decent offer. I think Philly is going big game hunting.

It's also possible to just draft bronny james late first, and sign Lebron for his farewell family tour in LeBronto (I jest)

Assuming we keep Jakob and that RJ doesn't regress to his Knicks form, then 4 of our 5 starting spots are already filled. That PF/SF hole should be filled by a poor man's OG type of player. There are stud options like Mikal Bridges, Keegan Murray, types that aren't realistic for us to acquire, but I think we can get someone like a Cam Johnson. I am a bit bummed out about not getting Aaron Nesmith from the Pacers. I actually think Nesmith would fit our current group quite nicely.

As for the bench I think we need to get a quality backup point guard. Not sure if Schroder is happy with that role but he is fine as a backup. If Gradey develops and we get lucky from the draft I think this team can at least try to get to the 2nd round next year.
