One week before the trade deadline…..

Post#1 » by Pointgod » Thu Feb 1, 2024 5:25 pm

And it’s obvious the direction the team should take. We need to do everything we can keep the pick. We’re currently in the 6th place for lottery odds and only two games a head of the Trailblazers. We need to trade our vets instead of going for it and there’s precedent for it.

Last year a week after the trade deadline the Blazers were 22nd in the league and the Raptors were 23rd. Raptors competed for the play in and ended up with the 13th pick while the Blazers doubled down to get the 5th pick and they got lucky and moved up to the 3rd pick. Not saying history will repeat but it makes the most sense to secure the 5th pick to keep our pick.

With that said, we have to move Brown, and get anything for GTJ, Boucher, Schroeder and even Poeltl if we can get an expiring contract and an asset. Rebuild the right way because I don’t think we’ll be bad enough next year unless our front office refuses to address shooting.

I’m thinking one or two of Brown, Gary, Boucher and Dennis are gone.

Hope Boucher / Dennis are gone just becuase of their age.

Brown / GTJ I could go either way. Brown will still have value in the off-season but clearing his cap would be nice. GTJ depends on what we can re-sign him at.
What an absolute failure and disaster this franchise is, ran by one of the most incompetent front offices in the league.

I think Brown and Schroeder are the obvious candidates. They are locked into not bad deal for anther season and you can sell them as multi year playoff contributors.

Boucher I dont' think is valued anywhere.

Trent I'm torn. 43% from 3 is not something I want to deal, but he literally does NOTHING else. I'm just not sure we can afford to give up pitching.

Nobody’s taking that Boucher contract off our hands.

Trade Gary. I don't want to pay him $20m+. Rather get a 2nd rounder out of it.

Trent is a tough one for me because I absolutely hate his game too. The only way I want him back is if we have nothing to do with the capspace and give him a huge 1+1 offer with a team option on the 2nd year creating a virtual expiring if things don't work. But keeping him around is also risky for the tank(which I am not that into to be honest), he is one of the few guys who can just suddenly swing a game with his shooting.
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

Please advise….

For an expiring, I agree. But I think we either attach the OKC 1st to it for someone we actually want or throw him in with Dennis and see if Dennis' value helps to carry him out of town.

The answer to who moves and who doesn't is likely in their contracts for the most part. OG and Siakam trades made clear that Masai is clearly prioritizing accumulating assets with at least 1 season of team control beyond 2024-25 around Scottie that can grow in value alongside him.

In the cases of Bruce Brown and Schroder, these guys will 100% be moved by the 2025 trade deadline at the latest because the Raptors only have their Early Bird rights in the 2025 offseason, which is basically useless for this 2 year retool that he has planned.

Boucher probably gets moved by the 2025 TDL at the latest too because even though we have his Bird rights in the 2025 offseason, he will be 33 heading into the 2025-26 season and likely doesn't fit the timeline.

Gary I'm 50/50 on, he technically fits the timeline and could be signed to an extension that makes him an asset under team control beyond the 2024-25 season, but he's been so bad this season and burned so much money off his next contract, he might look for another opportunity in FA to rebound rather than re sign with the retooling Raptors. In which case Masai might just move him for a 2nd+salary filler.

Poeltl has been getting talked about a lot as a potential trade candidate but I really doubt it happens. His trade value isn't as high as it was last season, he's pretty much the only C on a team that badly lacks Cs, and he's an asset who is under team control beyond the 2024-25 season.

bruce brown has no place being om this team. if you can flip him for a frp, do it ASAP. Maybe OKC to further legitimize themselves

Brown I really like, but if a half-decent 1st is offered or a young and interesting cost-controlled player is offered they might have to accept.

I think they'll probably keep Schroeder around. Even if they draft a backup for Quickley this summer, he might not be ready for full-time backup minutes right away, so hanging onto Dennis until next trade deadline might split the difference between helping development and gathering assets.

I agree that Gary's shooting is useful, but considering that he's a free agent this summer, I'm not sure that keeping him around for half a year is worth it if he can net even a couple of seconds. As you noted, he doesn't contribute anything else on the court (and while his shooting numbers are good this year, I still find he's too streaky and isn't the kind of shooter you can count on to make a few a game).

So what's that worth? I certainly wouldn't want the team paying him $20 mil+. Maybe if they could get him on a 3 year/$54 million kind of deal that would be alright. Would he accept that? Hard to say. But if they have a sense that he wouldn't I'd rather they fill out the roster with some cheap stop gap shooters until Gradey and the 2024 draft picks are ready for big time rotation minutes in a year or two.

The Boucher contract? It's one more year at like 10 million. It's really not a big deal.

I think Philly wants Gary. They need 3 point shooting. They're likely interested in Schroder also. Denver and NY Knicks want Brown. Poeltl is injured and unless teams see him play before the trade deadline, it's less likely they trade for him. He is terrible at FT, and can't shoot 3s. No contender wants that. I don't see any playoff team trading for Boucher.

Masai doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who will move a guy like Poeltl a year later for half of what he gave up for him.

GTJ is a weird one. No matter how much they yank him in and out of the starting lineup, the guy continues to say all the right things. Ultimate pro. He also seems to genuinely love Toronto and being a Raptor.

I have no idea what contract he could fetch on the open market. I would believe 12M per and I would also believe 28M per. He does have age and 42% on his side.

I'm kinda surprised that nothing has happened yet. My prediction is that one move is made (wish it were more) and most likely is BB. Second most likely is GTJ. I know toronto media been saying Boucher is gone, but I don't see anyone wanting that 2 year deal. Boucher and Dennis will likely be traded next trade deadline.

OKC can't be walking into the playoffs relying on rookies/young players to carry them all the way.

I would hope they'd be interested in Schroder or Brown to help with their lack of playoff experience

I don't understand this. Why are we trying so hard to move Boucher? He only makes 10m next year why would we give up a first to dump his salary?

If GTJ is not dealt by the deadline, I am going to assume there is already an agreement that he will resign with Toronto with agreed upon terms. Toronto will definitely trade one or all of CB, DS and BB if there is a favorable offer but I think Masai would be happy to keep them around.

Will be pretty pissed if Raps end up doing nothing at the deadline, but watch we end up with multiple 2nd round picks lol
