I hate this with every fiber of my being. We did this to avoid the second tax apron and get some assets, but Adams was an important role player for us. We definitely will be shopping for a center at the deadline and this summer.

Interesting. Adams even out for the year carried positive trade value. I know Memphis would value him this way, but a little surprised another team would. Adams will be a great vet influence in the Houston clubhouse and give them 20 solid minutes next year.

Like the pick up for the Rockets; Adams is the kind of no-nonsense vet you want around a rebuilding team and they could use a big body to bang down low.
I guess Memphis gets off his salary?

Can I interest you in a barely used Deandre Ayton?
Never had contact with another player.

Love this for Houston. As I said in the general thread, it’s an investment in the locker room and in next year. And a cheap one at that.
Wish Presti had done this tbh.

I wonder if we might be looking for a Robert Williams buy low opportunity. This should open up the full MLE now that could get us into the Hartenstein salary range.

Might be the funniest thing I've read on here this year.
Yeah this is an interesting move by Memphis, they lose a lot here but at the same time, the team heavily relies upon Adams rebounding and they probably are better suited to move on from that reliance and build a different way.
So short term it's painful, long term it's the right choice IMO.

Yeah Memphis was going to have problems with the second apron so needed to move some money around. I personally would have looked to cut it elsewhere, but the FO seems to have felt differently. Adams also hasn't been with the team but a few games this season so I don't know if there was something more going on in that respect.

I'm surprised about the value.
But right about Memphis caring about payroll next year.

Is Adams going to be okay playing 15mpg next year behind Sengun?
I love this if Houston can get a buy in from him, but I hate that he won't be starting in this league. He's been a consistent winner and one of my favorite players.

I hope Big Steve comes back before game 81 next year, sheesh.
Just kidding, of course. Good move for Houston. Assuming Memphis is back, healthy, and contending next year, this was probably a mistake. You know you can’t put JJJ in a heavy minutes banging role or bad things are eventually going to happen. Too fragile, doesn’t rebound enough. Memphis will have to shop to fill Adams’ role, but I guess it solves a short term money problem. I would have dumped Kennard first.

Re: [Woj] Steven Adams to Houston for VO and 2nds
It could be that Adams quietly asked for a trade as well due to the way his injury was managed. He seemed surprised when he wasn't allowed to play in the playoffs. He participated in shoot around that day and then the MRI ended up not clearing him. The medical staff opted for conservative management instead of surgery after that, but that didn't work and he had to get surgery the day before the season started. He has been completing his rehab away from the team in New Zealand and made his first appearance this season only a couple weeks ago. Memphis replaced their entire medical staff and switched orthopedic groups due to the Adams injury debacle, but I wouldn't blame Adams if there were some feeling of hurt and mistrust after all that.
On the Memphis side, maybe they feel the knee issues will be a chronic problem moving forward so saw an opportunity to get some assets and salary flexibility.
I still hate the trade though

I assume their logic was that it's easier (and cheaper) to find a 5 who can bang down low for 15-20 minutes a night than a guy who can shoot 40% from 3 on decent volume, but...Adams is a guy who just wins. You want guys like him in the locker room.

Love this for Houston.
It's not all about this season and Oladipo wasn't going to help anyway.
Adams will be a great back up for Sengun and a great person to have around the group for at least a year.
Watch Houston turn his expiring and Jeff Green/Tate/young players/assets into something big next deadline or in the off season.

Kennard’s issue is that he’s a very limited playoff performer. You need to sneak him in, get him some shots, and sneak him out before the opposition exploits the hell out of him via P&R or any kind of switch onto a scorer with a handle. Well, that and knee problems that are going to resurface occasionally. I love watching Kennard shoot, and his handle isn’t terrible either, but he just can’t move fast enough to react to much. He’s a lot like Bojan in that regard, except BB has the excuse of being very old for the league.

I don't have this as a clear indicator as saving money. I have been saying for over a year that we are likely going to move away from Adams even before his injury. I pushed against plenty of posters here trying to sell Adams as a toxic asset and I stated he clearly was not seen that way by Memphis. A decent trade offer come up and we took it is...that is all I see here.
We still could still flip Olidipo for a player or feel that we can get below the tax enough to have the full MLE which could give us the opportunity to sign a center. So while the net result is we might save some money here next year, I honestly don't think that is still the driving factor here. Now next year if we drop Kennard and don't use the MLE or this new TPE then I will be the first to admit that Memphis is prioritizing finances.

Re: [Woj] Steven Adams to Houston for VO and 2nds
Anyone else confused by the timing here? There’s no rush; neither guy will play extra games. Adams has been mostly rehabbing away, so you may not even get him in the locker room this season.
Seems like this would’ve been best waiting until the trade deadline in case it could’ve helped another deal get done? I doubt Memphis traded for Oladipo to play him. Just, feeling like that Windy meme right now….
