When's the last time this team had a good of a month as this past January was? I'm guessing maybe somewhere in the year they won the Atlantic division. This team is better than that one imo

This bolded paragraph in Katz's article in The Athletic on Brunson is the most perfect summation of the absurdity of Jalen's ascension, and, despite being euphoric, why so many of us (especially the older heads) have such difficulty processing/accepting it. We basically hit the Powerball with this confluence of timelines and history. It's literally unbelievable.

https://theathletic.com/5247022/2024/02/02/knicks-jalen-brunson-nba-all-star/

Thibodeau could never have known then that he would eventually become the head coach of that franchise. Even less so, he could not have predicted that Rick’s son would be the leader of his squad — and, as of Thursday, would officially become an NBA All-Star for the first time in his career.

No one in the clique could have guessed the engineer of that team, one that would shatter a seemingly never-ending stretch of Knicks-induced depression among its fan base, would be Rick Brunson’s at-the-time agent, Leon Rose, who would eventually work his way up at CAA, which also represents Thibodeau, to run the agency’s basketball division before the Knicks would hire him away to become their team president in 2020.

After Jalen signed with the Knicks two years ago, he provided a one-word response as to why: “Family.” He didn’t just hope to work for his father; Rose was there, too. He wanted to play for Thibodeau, the hyper-intense basketball addict he’d known since he was too young to remember. And it’s not like the Knicks had swiped away someone who was just as coveted everywhere else

Brunson’s former team, the Dallas Mavericks, had chosen not to offer him an extension that would have been approximately half of the $104 million he eventually signed with the Knicks, a contract that was widely critiqued as an overpay. Today, it’s one of the NBA’s most team-friendly deals.

This has not been the trajectory of a typical All-Star. Brunson was a three-year collegiate constant, a second-round pick who didn’t play much as a rookie and who didn’t regularly start until his fourth professional season. He’s shorter than his peers, can barely dunk and is more obsessive about pivots than he is about crossovers.

Of all the parallel universes in existence, this is the only one where Brunson becomes an All-Star with this team in this city playing for this team president and this coach while also becoming the face of an organizational turnaround. And yet, it’s happening.

I just posted almost exactly this in another forum to explain what we're going through right now.

The Brunson story has Knicks fans feeling like we're living in a simulation. Except for a few years of meh, we were basically bad for over two decades. Now this guy comes in who

1. is the son of a former Knick
2. who played on the '99 finals and '00 ECF teams with Ewing etc.
3. under Thibs as an assistant
4. but Rick was kind of bad
5. and Jalen would hang around the team
6. Rick was basically super psycho dad training this kid to become an NCAA champ
7. but he was still a second rounder
8. then a solid but hardly notable player in Dallas
9. until a breakout playoffs
10. and then he returns and becomes a legit star in the same frickin' arena he grew up coming to
11. under Thibs who is undertaking his own redemption story of sorts.

I.e. this guy with a direct lineage to the last time we were good, but via the worst player on that team, comes in as a complete underdog and leads the same team back from a laughing stock to prominence under the same coach, who has also been disgraced. This kind of **** isn't supposed to happen in real life and even Disney might laugh at its improbability.

Edit: I had not previously known Leon Rose was Rick's agent and that Rick was one of his first clients. Mind further **** blown.

I and-1'd your post, but then almost took it back based on your edit

How the hell did you not know that?!?! Rick wasn't just "one of his first clients", he WAS his first legitimate NBA client as an agent. Rick Brunson is literally the origin story of Leon Rose being involved in professional basketball as an NBA player agent. And the relationship was "reversed" for years, if you will, as Leon was doing anything and everything to cater to Rick as his one and only client, in order to establish himself in the NBA. They literally consider each other family - there's a reason that there are rumors that Jalen is LITERALLY LEON'S GODSON.

Leon Rose drew his first client in the mid-1990s and was fiercely loyal to him. Rose had helped out with other contracts before but Rick Brunson was a lifeline. Rose was a South Jersey guy who had deep ties to Temple University and frequently made trips to Philadelphia for the school’s games. Brunson, a 6-foot-4 guard, was a star there.

Rose was a full-service agent for Brunson, who stayed in the area after finishing college. Rose would arrive at six in the morning to Cherry Hill East High — his alma mater — to rebound as Brunson shot jumpers and barked profanely at him to make sure the strings were lined up straight. Despite their efforts, Brunson went undrafted in 1995.

When Brunson earned his first professional job later that year, with the Adelaide 36ers in Australia, he called Rose daily to complain about one thing or another. Rose’s phone bill, Brunson said, was more than his commission off the contract.

“I was a side hustle,” Brunson said. “But he really wanted to get into this field. We got into it together.”

tbf, they weren't wrong about precious making some decisions that even Julius would question  thankfully Thibs doesn't seem to be giving him much room to make those baffling decisions though, so precious can focus on the things he can do extremely well, like play D and provide energy.
