Long story short...

A "poison pill" clause kicks in when a team extends a player's rookie contract, but then tries to trade that player before the extension kicks in.

If the Magic still wanted to trade Cole, they'd only be able to send out $5,539,771 (Cole's salary for the final year of his rookie contract), but they would have to receive $13,033,333 million in return, which is Cole's average salary over the next three years.

It is far more challenging for teams who give out max extensions to guys off their rookie deals. Less so for somebody like Cole where the gap is only about $7.5M.

Caruso is soon to be 30 and would cost a fortune to get. This team is not a contender yet regardless, Paolo and Franz are not there yet, no point in major trades.
