Whatever it is common sense would say they are better off with a 9 million dollar Caruso then a 27 million Herro when they have a 40 million dollar injured LaVine paper weight while they are also dealing with Ball’s 20 million.

To be fair since Ball and Lavine are hurt and out for the season, the insurance picks up the tab so this is basically a free year payment wise for the Bull mgt, a good portion of 60 mil prorated off the books.

That prototypical big we are looking for is just not going to be available for the players we are offering and also the lack of draft capital has us a little with our hands tied behind our backs. It almost seems like a forgone conclusion that Jovic will be needed as a sweetener in order to get something useful using Duncan's contract that still has 19.4 next year and 19.9(9.9 guaranteed) for the next two years that we have to try and get out of to salvage the cap. Now the final year of the deal of Duncan will render him a very tradeable contract so basically a team is just going to carry him at the price tag for one more year.

Teams that could be willing to take on Duncan with the sweetener are the Utah Jazz(Kelly Olynyk and other expiring's like Horton or Dunn) and the Pistons with Bojan Bogdonovic or Alec Burks with Monte Morris. If we go all in on offense then Bojan Bogdonovic at the stretch 4 spot could be lethal with Bam and Butler. Spo could always tinker with the backcourt and can start Martin or J Rich at the 2 convincing Herro to take back the 6th man role in order to accommodate a veteran like Bogi. Also keep in mind that Duncan's old college coach is part of the front office for the Pistons and has always been a big fan of his. Might make this all the more realistic

Duncan Robinson and Nikola Jovic 20.5 million

to the Pistons for

Bojan Bogdonovic 20 million(expiring) and a 2027 2nd rd pick.

I think low cost options we should be exploring are players like:

Mo Bamba
Christian Wood
Sadiq Bey


In theory we might be able to get one of the players above dealing Thomas Bryant, Dru Smith and our 2026 LAL 2nd.

That could make this year’s trading deadline for the Heat the same as last year’s deadline considering the similar situations, essentially much ado about nothing.

In the power rotation, the Heat need a functional facsimile of what Dewayne Dedmon at one point provided for them. There has to be something bigger in reserve in the power rotation, if only to take fouls against opposing bigger big men.

And on the wing, a defensive pest to at least try to contain and perhaps even slow down opposing speed guards.

But what you can’t do is spend the first half of the season noting the 25 lineups, the 16 different starters, the extended absences of core pieces, the shifting landscape with Rozier, and then go ahead and blow it up without an extended read.

That is what these final two months of the season should be, an extended runway to the postseason for the players, an extended workshop in the laboratory for Spoelstra.

At the start of last season’s playoff run, Spoelstra spoke of how it almost was his 2022-23 team’s destiny to do it the hard way out of the play-in round.

It is looking as if that could be the path again.

It also looks as if this group deserves the chance to see if it is capable of bigger and better, rather than some sort of Hail Mary at the trading deadline.
