Out of curiosity who could you see offering more for Olynyk and what type of draft compensation would you expect in a trade for Dunn alone with a small expiring contract like Flynn coming back to Utah?
Olynyk has been linked to basically every contending team..if he was just going to cost a 2nd..he would've been traded already. Olynyk is an elite role player whether people want to admit it or not. He's an excellent facilitator, he's shooting a career best 43% from 3. He has a very high basketball IQ and he's not a dreadful defender. He can fit in basically any offense because what he provides. By all accounts jazz are playing to qualify for the playoffs. So if it's 1 2nd for Olynyk? Yeah Utah isn't doing that.
On Dunn..Dunn is literally the starting point guard on the team. To think that he is viewed as some cut candidate is asinine. He's had a resurgence on his career and has shown just how valuable he can be especially on the defensive end. He is the communicator on defense for the team. He'd be a great fit with Thibs..but a 2nd round pick isn't closing that either.
It's fine if people don't see the value in these two players. But that's what it is, these guys are much more valuable to Utah than 2 2nds
It's just hard for me to gauge the value of these 2 players. I'm sure most contending teams would love to have Olynyk on their roster but how many contending teams have a need for him, can match his contract and give a decent offer for him?
In the East Boston would love to have him but it is difficult to match his salary. He doesn't solve the Bucks' defensive issues. Does the addition of Olynyk to the Sixer elevate them to the level of the Celtics? Are they even in the market for Olynyk especially if the season may be lost already if Embid is done for the season? Maybe the Cavs could use him but they have other needs. As a Knicks fan I would love to Olynyk on the team as a different style big and added regular season depth but I know he is much more of a luxury than a necessity. When the team is at full strength he will have a very limited role if Thibs doesn't bench him completely because of his poor defense.
In the West the Wolves don't need him. The Nuggets could use a back up big but it is also difficult for them to match his salary. The Suns and Clippers have limited trade assets that they would be willing to move for Olynyk. Maybe the Kings could use him in their offense but they also have bigger needs. OKC is an option but they could use their assets elsewhere or just wait until the offseason to make a move. Maybe a team like the Lakers could make a desperation trade as a fringe play-in team but I don't think Olynyk elevates them to a contender.
I just don't expect there to be a huge market for an expiring almost 33 year old Olynyk. I'm sure Ainge will do his best to drum up his value if he decides to trade him and up his value but I don't see a big demand for KO. I could actually see Dunn generating more interest with how easy it would be to match his contract but it is also difficult to gauge his value. He is currently starting for the Jazz but he basically just plays the first half of the 1st and 3rd quarters and often sits for the rest of the game. Even in his role as the starting point guard he is largely playing off-ball with Sexton bringing the ball up the court and initiating the offense. He obviously would not be a starting point guard for most teams in the league but seems to have a substantial positive impact on this Jazz team.
I doubt either player returns a first without some bad money coming back but I can understand why they would expect more than 2 2nds for both players.
