Thoughts?

Simmons and DFS expire at the end of next season. Grant Williams stays with your team, dragging it down to the bottom of the league, through the end of 2026-27 season. An easy no for the Nets.

At the end of the day we have Luka So he won't drag the team to the bottom of the league. We just haven't been healthy thats the main issue with the mavs.

Brooklyn is outside the luxury tax and won’t be pursuing free agents this summer since they’re saving cap space for 2025.

Why give up on the upside now when there’s essentially nothing to lose?

I definitely get this. The incentive here is meager. So if the Nets believe they can get a reasonable number of games out of him next year I can definitely see holding on to him.

Where I disagree is with your buddy thinking he returns an all-star guard(I mean cmon) or even that he becomes valuable next year. My guess is this offer as bad as it is, probably is better than any real offer the Nets could ever get this year or next, especially since him being expiring is meaningless since Brooklyn won't take on future salary, so he's not even a tool to collect assets for doing that next year. And since he's clearly not in 25 and beyond plans, I figured this was worth a shot.

Because its very likely THJ contributes more than Simmons next year. But I want to gamble on Simmons instead so I can't tell you not to. :D

Sounds to me like the Mavs need Tobias Harris.

Eh, he'd help, sure. But we don't have anything we'd be willing to give up that Philly would accept so there is no deal there. Brooklyn can take on salary for next year. Philly shouldn't--or not for any of these Mavs pieces. And Dallas shouldn't give up a first round pick here which Philly would need considering the quality of the Dallas matching salary.

Tobi is expiring, and the Sixers should be going after bigger fish in FA. And since Joel will not be back before April at the earliest, I'm not sure the Sixers make the play-in even with Maxey and Harris.

If Dallas is truly "desperate" then I don't see why something can't be worked out, even if it involved a third team.

We can always offload him in the off season if we want to and get a nicer deal because he would be a massive contract expiring IF we don't just let him expire or sign him for much much less ourselves.

This really needs to be considered. We have to see both sides.

Can you though? Even expiring, he's a MASSIVE sized contract, that with tighter salary matching requirements starting the day after the regular season (apron teams can't add salary in trade and have to can only salary match at 100%), and second apron teams won't be able to aggregate contracts or send out a player via sign and trade for salary matching, and your "market" is narrowing.

I totally agree, y'all could let him expire and reap that salary cap space. But also, THJ and Holmes also expire at the same time, and are infinitely more likely to make it onto the court. Plus, with their smaller expiring salaries, they provide much easier salary matching and are much easier for first and second apron teams to acquire as they're much less likely to aggregate salaries for, etc.

TBH I don't believe the mavs are desperate. If this team stays together as is I believe we can make a run when we get healthy. Health has been a massive issue for the mavs so far.
