NBA MVP Discussion Thread 2023-24 (Part 4: MVP Thread's Revenge)
Here's the new-new MVP discussion thread!
The poll is set up so you can change your vote as the players jockey for position throughout the season.
In this version of the poll the new additions are Jalen Brunson and Donovan Mitchell. Embiid is out since he won't meet the threshold for number of games played. Halliburton goes down to the "other" category since he's been in and out of the lineup and didn't get any votes last time. And I just thought the streaking Knicks and Cavs needed a representative at this point. There are more players deserving of consideration than there are poll options, so it's always a tough choice.
Pretty please follow RGM posting guidelines and do your part to avoid this thread becoming a toxic mess. Keep it friendly and don't troll or insult each other. And please resist bashing one player in order to prop up another, it just baits other posters and makes for a hostile environment. This is supposed to be fun, you guys!
Thanks and enjoy!

Looks like a Jokic vs SGA vs Giannis contest.

Im curious, say if Jokic wins this MVP and gets 1 more championship (and FMVP). How many players are 3x MVPs and 2x FMVPs? That list cant be more than 6-7 guys.

Kareem
Jordan
Lebron
Magic
Bird
Russell and Wilt didn't have chance to get the FMVPs
Moses Malone the MVPs but "only" had 1 FMVPs
Shaq had the FMVPs but "only" 1 MVP
So yea, it would be elite company

Off the top of my head it’s Jordan, Kareem, LeBron, Bird, Magic. Duncan has the inverse of what you said (2x MVP and 3x FMVP). So basically you have a resume only the top 5ish players ever could match.
And of that list, all those players had teammates who were perennial all stars and hall famers. Compare that with Joker who’s never even played with a single all star.

Thank you for the two replies above, so ya basically freakishly elite company. Essentially the first names you think of when you think of the history of the NBA.

Might put him in the conversation of top 10 player of all time or close to it. Maybe 3 chips gets him there. But the path will be clear

Back to back chips in a small market, three mvps and an ATG peak would have him comfortably in the top ten I reckon. Not all rings are equal.

Same thing with Giannis lot of season to go nothing is guaranteed yet. Bucks management put the team in a hole with the Griffen hire and fire. But all us bucks fans are back to enjoying watching team again. Doc starting to play some of the young players on team and that needs to continue.

Give it to whoever finishes higher in the West, SGA or Jokic.

Re: NBA MVP Discussion Thread 2023-24 (Part 4: MVP Thread's Revenge)
It's crazy how neck and neck Jokic and SGA seem right now. Basic counting stats feel very comparable overall, though obviously getting their numbers in different ways. The advanced stats are where Jokic usually separates himself, but this season SGA is actually almost keeping up with Jokic in a lot of those areas. And then team success wise, their records are basically identical right now as well.
______Jokic - SGA
PER___32.1 - 30.9
WS____10.6 - 10.8
WS/48_ .307 - .305
BPM___14.3 - 10.4
VORP__ 6.9 - 5.3
ORTG__133 - 132
DRTG__110 - 109
This is the closest I feel like I've seen anyone come to matching Jokic's advanced numbers in a season over the past few years. And SGA has made a massive jump in a few of those. PER of 27.2 last year to 30.9 this year. BPM from 7.3 to 10.4. His WS/48 from .226 to .305 is a crazy jump and he has nearly matched last year's WS total in 20 less games played.
SGA is having a truly special season right now. If both players keep on the same statistical trajectory the rest of the year and their teams finish with around the same number of wins, I really don't know how you choose between them. I think the tiebreaker might just come down to the fact that SGA is doing it with a young OKC team that is way outperforming expectations, along with the fact that he's never won it before. But I could also see voters giving some weight to Jokic winning the title last year, after seemingly docking him in last year's vote for perceived lack of playoff success (though it really shouldn't play a role in either instance). I don't think they can go wrong either way, but to me they're definitely the two clear frontrunners as of now.

it's incredible how identical they are in ORTG\DRTG and how incredible their marks are
p.s, it's been established that Westbrook "broke" BPM back in the day and the forumla had to be adjusted and Jokic has broke it again, because of the outlier that is his passing from that position and there will be further adjustemtnt to amend that

personally I think a repeat is very unlikely but I mean, if he were to do that, in this crazy season with superteams all around and he'll get it done again, over all of these teams..playing with Murray, AG and MPJ then he'll have earned that kind of talk, in the company of those you think of when you think about the greatness in NBA history

Kind of also makes you realise how ridiculous Jokic is. SGA has been an efficiency monster this season and he still trails in most advanced metrics.

Oh ya to be clear I also dont see the Nuggets repeating this year, even though if playoff Murray shows back up and teams still not having any way to slow down Jokic, I wont be shocked if they do it again. But ya this was more just in general if he does get one more title (FMVP) in general. Because I do have him as the favorite (slight) over SGA and I can see Denver going for a late season push to really try and lock up homecourt.

You might as well count Bill Russell in the conversation. He would’ve had many finals MVP’s
