Killian Hayes Concepts that actually give Detroit something?

Post#1 » by eitanr » Tue Feb 6, 2024 3:16 pm

Is it possible for Detroit to move Killian Hayes for anything beyond an expiring deal? Namely either a talent they take a flyer on or maybe even a vet on a deal that could fit their future rotation. I am skeptical, but I will try...

1 (MIL). K. Hayes FOR P. Connagton

The Bucks need to drastically improve their perimeter defense. While Hayes has been an iffy shooter in his career, he is a strong defensive talent. If you place Hayes in units with spacing, which the Bucks still have, especially with bigs like Portis or Lopez spacing, you may even unlock something from Hayes. The defensive upside makes this interesting for Milwaukee.

For Detroit Pat is a solid shooting wing who can help be their backup 2 long term. The contract isn't amazing in terms of years given his age, but the fit works (basically a healthier/better Joe Harris).

2. (SAS) K. Hayes + top 1 protected 2024 pick swap for Tre Jones

It's certainly a gamble for the Spurs. They swap Tre Jones, who has been in/out of their starting lineup as their PG in order to make the french connection with Wemby and take a flyer on Hayes. The swap is aggressive, but with both teams likely to be in that bottom 4 with even odds, and that no. 1 pick protected, the Spurs use that value gap for the added bonus of potentially drafting to 2 in 2024. The Spurs consider such a trade because another Frenchmen, Zaccharie Risacer is expected to go second.

For Detroit, they need a future PG who can actually fit with their youth. No one in the draft seems like best fit and Tre Jones is a mature, young PG who can fit their core. The Pistons add protection on the pick to limit the gamble, but worst case here, is there that much of a gap talent wise for their fit between 4-2? Caleb Williams right now seems like a choice at 1, if Detroit gets 2-4, I am not even sure they want to take anotehr development project like Risacer anyhow at second and might rather be forced into Sarr or Walter anyhow.

3. (ATL) K. Hayes for AJ Griffin

I'm unsure what AJ's value is now, but he has not been in the Hawks' rotation all season. Would the Hawks prefer to cut bait and take a flyer on a needed defensive minded young guard to fit their rotation instead?

AJ can shoot and play both wing slots, a solid at least Livers replacement for Detroit.

4. (MIN) K. Hayes for S. Milton

Minny is asking for a backup PG and can take a solid flyer here. Hayes fits with spacing big men, like Naz and KAT.

For Detroit, Milton is a rotation vet that can help ease the transition from M. Morris for the next few years as a reliable option as as backup combo guard.

5. (OKC) K. Hayes for POKU

The Thunder could use a defensive backup guard who may be useful in spurts during what could be a long playoff run and have no use for Poku right now.

Okay...I know I said Detroit should stop trading for flyers, but if your going to do one, this seems intriguing. Poku is still a spacing 4/5 which if he does anything, is a massive need for the Pistons long term. Wiseman will not be re-signed and Beef Stew is currently injured. Now is the chance to take a well thought out flyer on Poku and see if you catch lightning.

The Spurs should drive Jones from San Antonio to Detroit if that offer is on the table. The Pistons shouldn't even consider it this far out.

Other than going back in time and not drafting him I don't see a way to salvage this.

The best thing about Killian is that his contract expires

We can take on more money and stay under the tax. If Philly doesn't have a better way to get under the tax, RoCo + weak SRP for Killian works, and leaves Philly just a few K over the tax, so a couple of near-mins would have to be added

so

RoCo + Springer + 2024 NYK SRP

for

Hayes + Knox

Philly gets under the tax for a low price of a late SRP

Detroit gets an SRP, and we keep Weaver from extending Hayes!

Derrick Rose/3.5m cash/our last 2024 2nd. Det makes 3 m cash and a late 2nd for eating rose 3m next year. Memphis gives him a tryout and clears roses money next year.

I think Furkan in place of Springer here?

I was going to say Hayes for Covington with a side of Muscala for Furkan..

Philly probably trying to turn Hayes and a second into someone else though.

Yeah, Furkan fits into a Detroit TPE, so Hayes for RoCo+Korkmaz+SRP works. I can understand why Philly wouldn't want to just throw Springer in, but he'd be of no value to Detroit, so it's simpler with Furkan Korkmaz.

If Hayes made $9K less, it would work with just Hayes for RoCo to get Philly under the tax line, but over is over

I mean Poku has been out of the rotation all season for OKC. That swap doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

Honestly Killian Hayes isn't even worth the time the Pistons are investing in him, he's a distraction that only takes time away from Ivey and Sasser, just use him as salary filler in whatever deal you can and get over with it. 4 years is more than enough.

In a vacuum, the Spurs should definitely do this. In reality, this is a draft where picking 2, 3, 4 may not be much different except cheaper, and I'm afraid it'll hurt youth development more than it'll help bringing in talent, I don't want to risk pissing Wemby off and creating turmoil in the roster. Also, Tre Jones isn't a good fit for the Pistons, he's a good player but his weakness is 3 point shooting and they don't need yet another non 3 point shooting PG.

Tre Jones is another guard that can't shoot. Why on earth are we attaching high stakes pick swaps to get him?! Don't give Pop some incentive to stop tanking. Pistons land #2 and the Spurs pass Charlotte (likely) and suddenly they can drop to #8 in the draft from that slot. All for 29% from 3 Tre Jones when you've got Ivey, Cade, and Sasser (and Morris) already. This is stuff that gets GM's fired.

Even in a "bad draft" where a lot of the guys at the top are a mixed bag in terms of overall talent, you still want your best opportunity at picking the one of them that fits best with what you've got. You can't slide down and miss out on one of the forwards all to grab another guard that can't shoot and thus would struggle to see the floor next to Ausar, Duren, etc much like Killian.

Just cut Killian and have it over with.

3 team simple...
Hayes and Knox out for DET
DET receives Poku and Tre Mann

Poku and Mann out for OKC + LAC 1st 2024 [it would be the '2nd worst of UTA HOU OKC LAC in 2024], 2 SRPs
OKC receives DFS and Knox

DFS out for BKN
BKN receives Hayes and pick compensation

It basically gives Brooklyn cap reset and picks. IDK if this is worth DFS, I heard BKN is looking for 2 FRPs but that's too steep for him in my estimation
Cheers

Any Killian Hayes transaction gives Detroit something, because a lack of Hayes on the roster is already a big something.

No chance the Wolves would have any interest. The first problem is that Hayes makes $2.4M more than Milton and there's no way Minnesota would take on the additional money. The second problem is that one of the critical skills that the Wolves are looking for is shooting and Hayes provides none. The last problem is that Hayes just isn't very good and is unlikely to get any playing time on a playoff team.

Spurs do this if they can get another PG.

With flat lotto odds you will still get a chance to pick higher.

I'd do cash and THT for Hayes. Still expiring, can play him as a point guard or secondary wing creator. Not my favorite player at all, but Utah would get a TPE out of it that could come in handy next year.

Could use him Dallas with Exum out, but not sure what to send back.

Dallas wouldn't play him. Curry isn't playing at all and Hardy's minutes are erratic. Green is their 3rd ballhandler and when your first two are Kyrie and Luka, they don't need a Hayes to tide them over until Exum is back.

Honest question as I don’t get to watch the Pistons often. Will Hayes be in the league next year? He seems likely to fall to the G and stay there.
