sour feeling knowing that we will likely finish bottom 6-7 at best and might still lose our pick

Bottom-5 is still wthin reach. If we could pass Portland (and keep Memphis at bay), we're in pretty good shape.

What is pretty good shape? Realistically, we are not catching DET/WAS/SA/CHA and neck & neck with MEM/POR. Here are the odds of us losing our pick to SAS (i.e., not Top 6 (source: tankathon.com)):

  • 5th last place = 36%
  • 6th last place = 54%
  • 7th last place = 68%
So even in the realistic best case where we end up 5th last, there's still a 36% chance of losing our pick. If we stay where we are in 6th last, the odds of losing our pick exceeds 50%. I don't see this as being in "pretty good shape."

We have 33 games remaining which can be used to assess whether BBQ can win games together. If not, and a BBQ led team can't even beat out two of ATL/CHI/ORL/MIA for a playoff spot, then how good will they become towards being championship caliber?

The best way to find out whether they can win is for them to try to win, not asking them to tank or rest/sit them by feigning injury. Thus, IMO, with likely <50% chance of keeping our pick, we are better off continuing to try to win this season than tank.

74% chance of keeping our keep is pretty good odds. Obviously it isn't an ideal scenario, but that's the position we find ourselves in thanks to Masai's shortsightedness.

If we had our pick, then yeah, I'd be all for trying to win at the expense of a few spots in the draft. But us trying to win reduces our chances of keeping the pick too much. We're already here, so might as well commit to the tank at this point.

If the pick's so good, put a name to it. Let us know who that top five talent is.

Anything is possible, but I don't expect we stay "ahead" of Memphis (17 vs 18). 13 injuries right now, although many are short term is very hard to keep up with.
I'm sure they will take their time to injures with Bane, JJJ, Clarke, Smart.

Player Team Update Description
Santi Aldama Memphis Grizzlies Sun, Feb 4, 2024 Out (Tailbone) - Aldama is out for Sunday's (Feb. 4) game against Boston.
Desmond Bane Memphis Grizzlies Sun, Jan 14, 2024 Out (Ankle) - The Grizzlies announced that Bane has a left ankle sprain and will be re-evaluated in six weeks.
Brandon Clarke Memphis Grizzlies Wed, Dec 20, 2023 Out (Achilles) - Clarke said he expects to make his season debut around the NBA All-Star break.
Jaren Jackson Jr. Memphis Grizzlies Sat, Feb 3, 2024 Out (Hip) - Jackson Jr. is OUT for Sunday's (Feb.4) game against Boston.
John Konchar Memphis Grizzlies Sun, Feb 4, 2024 Out (Calf) - Konchar is out for Sunday's (Feb. 4) game against Boston.
Jake LaRavia Memphis Grizzlies Sun, Jan 14, 2024 Out (Ankle) - The Grizzlies announced that LaRavis has a Grade 2 high left ankle sprain and will be re-evaluated in three weeks.
Ja Morant Memphis Grizzlies Mon, Jan 8, 2024 Out For Season (Shoulder) - Grizzlies announced Ja Morant will undergo season-ending surgery on his shoulder.
Victor Oladipo Memphis Grizzlies Tue, Oct 24, 2023 Out (Knee) - Oladipo is out while recovering from a left patellar tendon repair.
Derrick Rose Memphis Grizzlies Sun, Feb 4, 2024 Out (Hamstring) - Rose is out for Sunday's (Feb. 4) game against Boston.
Marcus Smart Memphis Grizzlies Thu, Jan 11, 2024 Out (Finger) - Smart suffered a severe right finger injury and will miss approximately six weeks, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Xavier Tillman Sr. Memphis Grizzlies Sun, Feb 4, 2024 Out (Knee) - Tillman Sr. is out for Sunday's (Feb. 4) game against Boston.
Vince Williams Jr. Memphis Grizzlies Sun, Feb 4, 2024 Out (Wrist) - Williams Jr. is out for Sunday's (Feb. 4) game against Boston.
Ziaire Williams Memphis Grizzlies Sat, Feb 3, 2024 Out (Hand) - Williams is OUT for Sunday's (Feb.4) game against Boston.

A perfect night for the tank tonight would be:

Pacers losing to Rockets
Grizzlies beating the Knicks
Nets beating Mavericks
Thunder losing to Jazz

Fingers crossed. Every game counts toward the tank

Raps are really bad, I think it will be difficult to not get top 6 pick. Even if they get unlucky and leapt and they give up 7th pick, its not that big of a deal as next year they will be in the 4-7 range again and we would have to do this whole song and dance anyways. At least they have 3 other picks this year and can move up if they want to I am sure. Awful trade yes, but not the end of the world really. The worst part of the trade is that they didnt tank for Wemby and tried to make the playoffs in 2023

I almost want us to get 6th, so we can pin this thread when the pick flops. We can remind you the pick still has to convey.

This song and dance hamstringing our rebuild just for a role player center is why I'm so angry at Masai. He painted this team into a tiny corner for the play-in after proclaiming "play-in for what!"

I feel so betrayed and lied to

What are you guys gonna do if the pick conveys this year, the Spurs draft a stud with the pick, and we improve just enough to pick later in the lottery like 11-13 next year and can't even get a top lottery pick anymore?

Anything can happen. There's nothing good about this situation. It absolutely is a big deal no matter how you try to justify it. Masai **** up big time.

How will the pick flop when we are going to draft a stud? Tanking or NBA finals. Nothing in between
