Elsewhere atop the Eastern Conference, Boston has been weighing various options who could deepen the Celtics’ bench, according to league sources. Boston will likely be limited to adding pieces through its $6.25 million traded-player exception with which the Celtics could bring on a veteran target such as Otto Porter Jr., sources said. Another name on Boston’s radar: Nets guard Lonnie Walker, who’s generated a wealth of interest from playoff teams while playing well on a minimum contract, sources said.
Cool.
I'm fine with either of them.
Lonnie would be a nice scoring weapon off the bench. Dude is shooting like 45% from 3 this season and 23 points per 36 mins. To put that in perspective, that number would rank tied for 3rd on the Celtics (with KP), only behind Tatum and Brown. Pritchard and Hauser are both at 13 points per 36 mins.
However, Lonnie just re-injured his hamstring in their last game, he's out tonight with hamstring injury..same injury that sidelined him for 17 games earlier in the season.
OPJ is also an intriguing option. He's got shooting and size. He's a veteran with plenty of NBA experience, playoff experience. Won a ring with the warriors in 2022..shot like 55% from 3 against us in the NBA finals. And while he has injury concerns, he is only 30 yrs old so should still have some gas left in the tank..perhaps enough to help us get a title. Hasn't played much this season in Toronto but from what I've seen on film, his mobility isn't great but still is able to hold his own on D pretty well..and can still shoot.
OPJ is a stretch 4 who can play some at the 3. Gives us another option at the 3/4 spots besides Hauser and Brissett. Much more of a shooting threat than Brissett. Stronger physically, better defender than Hauser. And way more NBA experience, playoff experience and even finals experience than both of them.
But is OPJ healthy? Hasn't played in a game since 12/30. But perhaps he's fine and Toronto is just holding him out while they look for a team that will take him in a trade..
Either OPJ or LW4 could certainly help bolster our bench. Both would be cheap..we wouldn't have to give up much to get them. However, both are on expiring contracts..so not sure if Brad will actually pull the trigger, considering he has traded for 8 guys now as POBO and none of them were half season rentals..
