Re: 76ers 2023-24 Season Thread Part 2
Maxey showing what he is with Embiid out - a Tiny shooting guard who relies on circus shots and long threes. If those high-risk shots aren't dropping he is a liability.
I love his passion and attitude, but he gets hunted on defense and doesn't have the playmaking ability to be a true point guard.
This year Embiid has been the main playmaker, and his gravity has given Maxey so much space. With Embiid playing he gets so many uncontested shots, but without that, he struggles.
He's too small to shoot over players, but can blow by most with his speed. However with no Embiid drawing players out of the lane he continues to hit a wall of players.
He will have a few games where the defense is not up on him and his bombs land, but he's not who he has been hyped to be.
He's at best the third option on a good team, or a Kemba Walker on a bad team.
Philly needs to have a good think about what they are going to do. If Joel is going to be back this year it's too late to change things up. But Embiid's injury could be career-changing - depending how big the tear is. It's likely that his mobility will be majorly affected. If it's a bad tear, Phil should trade Maxey for the best package they can get, because his value is the highest it will ever be right now, but it's about to come back down to earth over the next couple of months.
I'm sure nobody here will agree with this, there is rarely the ability to evaluate players without bias on fan pages, but I guess we'll see down the track if I'm right.

DeRozen isn't a great fit here. We need quality, volume 3 point shooters. Either Bogdanovic would be nice and I would take Buddy Heild. Kelly Olynyk would be great, but Ainge probably wants 3 1st round picks for him.

The Sixers' soonest pick they can trade won’t come until 2026. So while Philadelphia’s three picks it yielded in return for James Harden would suggest the Sixers have plenty of ammunition to go out and acquire a meaningful player, Philadelphia seems to be prioritizing ways to buy now, while maintaining future flexibility.
Philadelphia is exploring conversations with a variety of teams, but one known target for the Sixers is Pacers guard Buddy Hield, league sources told Yahoo Sports. Hield’s $18.5 million dollar salary would be a match for several of the Sixers’ expiring contracts, and his expiring deal wouldn’t add future financial burden onto Philadelphia’s clean cap sheet for this offseason, as the Sixers have left rival teams with the impression they are still wary of taking back longterm salary at this juncture.
Another target for the Sixers is Pistons guard Bojan Bogdanović, sources said, who is on the books for $20 million this season, but has just $2 million guaranteed for 2024-25. Detroit has long shown an interest in a reunion with Tobias Harris, league sources told Yahoo Sports, but in any deal where the Sixers bring back Bogdanović, it would seem Philadelphia doesn’t want to part with Harris.
Alas, Detroit officials haven’t indicated to rival teams they’ll even be willing to move Bogdanović. Veteran shooting bigs Mike Muscala and Danilo Gallinari do appear to be likely trade candidates for the Pistons.
Awe man those names bum me out. Hield, Bogdanovic, those guys aren't appreciably moving the needle.
Absolutely cannot trade 1sts unless they are essentially getting our long term "3rd guy".
Good news : Morey knows he needs as much cap space as he can get.
Bad news : Morey doesn't know why he needs that.

There's just no way. Drummond is a fine innings eater during the regular season. But there's a reason why he was on a minimum here and took a 2 for 6 there.
DeRozan and Drummond are rentals and the Bulls can't ask for much for those 2. Caruso is on a good contract. He's not worth 2 firsts on his own. He's a very good role player, not a star. But put all 3 together--- DeRozan, Caruso & Drummond--- and I would give them 2 firsts and Paul Reed, plus KJ and some expiring.
For the Sixers this gives you 3 guys who can keep us in contention while Embiid is out but they are also good enough to be in the playoff rotation.
Then next year, we can decide to resign either DeRozan or Tobias to reasonable deals depending on who shows out better this year. Caruso is on a great contract and we can keep him next year while letting Melton go. Drummond is also a reasonable long term back up for Joel for then next few years and more dependable than Reed.
Our rotation without Embiid can be:
Drummond - Tobias - DeRozan- Caruso - Maxey
Backed up by:
Bama - Batum - Oubre - Melton - Bev
When Embiid returns your 9 man playoff line up are:
Embiid - Maxey - DeRozan - Tobias - Caruso - Batum - Melton- Oubre - Drummond
I don't think you need to sell any Sixers fans on that trade proposal. It'd be great for the Sixers. I just don't think that the Bulls would do it.
Maybe you're right. But those crazy asking prices become more reasonable as it gets closer to the deadline. None of those 3--- DeRozan, Drummond & Caruso--- have long term value for the Bulls. Even Caruso is almost 30 years old and he's a win now role player, not the future.
I think if the Bulls can get 2 firsts, Reed, (KJ), and $35M in cap space for next year from the Sixers that's a decent haul.

Not sure - probably. I've always thought his best comparison would be peak Lou Williams, so I think I probably said he would make a great high-impact 6th man who is hidden on defense. And I still think that's the case.

If you trade Maxey, you better be packaging him with picks to trade for someone better . Otherwise, what's the point?
And anybody you that could even potentially be available for him (Markkanen, George), are they getting you over the hump or do you still need another guy anyway? If you need another guy, you better have two trades lined up...
Or is it simpler to try to acquire a couple more draft picks for all of the other guys, and see if you if can trade for one of those same guys when they become available?

If Embiid has a bad tear - they need to blow it up, because without him dominating this team is not in the running for the playoffs. Right now with him injured, they are probably in the bottom 10 teams in the league, with no starter-level young players outside of Maxey, who I don't believe will be a top-level player.
They need to do all they can while they have the best player on the planet available, but if he loses his mobility the tank needs to begin.

I gave my reasons in my post if you want to read it.
Embiid has made him look miles better than he is. Do you think If Embiid was not on this team Maxey would be an all-star (the most overrated award in sport - Kobe was an All Star playing 6 games in 2014).

LMFAO, trade Maxey?
Dude is on a Lillard/Step trajectory. His numbers at the same age are literally better than theirs. Even one or two rungs below is a top 10-15 player in the league at his peak.
He has shown exponential growth each year. But yeah lets trade him for some injury prone aging vet. The absolute **** am I reading on here.

I don't agree with the notion that we should trade Maxey while his value is at its highest. Now that doesn't mean I wouldn't trade Maxey for the right player.
Players I would trade Maxey for right now that I think offering Maxey at least starts the conversation (I'll leave off unrealistic names such as Jalen Brunson)
Lamelo Ball - At some point Charlotte will sell him
Donovan Mitchell
Jalen Williams - Very close to unrealistic, but at some point OKC has to move one of their big-name players
Trae Young - if he were to ever ask out
Ja Morant - if Memphis gets tired of him
Luka Doncic- If he were to ever ask out
Brandon Ingram
Anthony Edwards
Jamal Murray
It's a short list, but those are players I'd trade Maxey for off the top of my head. Again, I don't want to trade him, but I don't look at Maxey as untouchable for same the reasons you listed above. He's better suited as the third part of a "big three", I agree with that. I do think if you're "selling" Maxey, then you're essentially going to do the same with Joel and you're going to call it quits and rebuild for a couple of years. If that's the case, then you can probably say goodbye to Nick Nurse as your coach. In short, it's probably much better if we just wait and kind of see how Maxey matures over the next four years.
Now, there's an entirely different side to this that suggests that he IS a number 2 option and I'll try and keep it short. Look at the surrounding cast Maxey has had without Joel Embiid. Danuel House, Paul Reed, Kelly Oubre, and Marcus Morris. None of these guys are starters, House and Morris aren't even NBA quality players in my opinion, Paul Reed is ok as a backup, and Kelly Oubre is a bonehead and most certainly better suited as a spark plug off the bench. The four players around Maxey are terrible! Nobody else in that lineup can create. Nobody else on this team can create. Dwayne Wade couldn't carry these guys. Patrick Beverley is the only player on this team who even resembles a point guard. Any reserves playing with Maxey aren't much better. We have major holes! The only player that has taken any of the heat off of Maxey has been Tobias Harris and he's always going to be what he's been for us regardless of who's playing. You get some good games and then you get some Houdini games where he just vanishes. Notice that when Tobias Harris plays well and has a good game, Maxey does too. At times Maxey is literally the only one that can get a basket for us out there. Of course teams are going to key in on stopping him. Danuel House isn't beating anyone! None of these guys can even make an open three aside from Tobias Harris.
Also, just to close this out, we have to consider Maxey's age. He's 23...What player at age 23 in the NBA was carrying his team to the postseason? Aside from Lebron James doing it (possibly the greatest of all time), who else? I really can't think of too many. Even Iverson was 25 by the time he took us to the Finals. Not comparing Maxey to Iverson, but I am saying that the maturity to do so in this league takes time. Maxey is still a pup at 23. I don't think we should trade him, but I don't overvalue him either like you've suggested.

Man, Joel gets hurt a week ago and we’re already trying to strip the franchise for parts.

Just for all those who said Maxey is nothing without Joel we were 0-4 as well when Tyrese was out.(And also 0-4 without Tobi)
And just so sad that we don't even have a chance to see how Joel will respond in games with no Tyrese this season. (except that game vs Warriors)

Clowns have been trying to trade Maxey from the jump, starting with for Lowry and then for tons of other has-beens like Dame.
Thankfully Morey isn’t that dumb.

These are speculative names...Keep in mind I'm not in favor of trading Tyrese Maxey. But these are a few names I'd trade him for.
Anthony Edwards if Minnesota has a falling out
Lamelo Ball - You can call him injury prone, but he's worth trading for
Brandon Ingram
Jalen Williams
Trae Young - He's a bit older, but he's a true point guard that can make things work if Embiid were to sit.
Donovan Mitchell- Again a bit older, but he's another player that can hold it down when guys get hurt. At this point I think the Cavs would part with Garland before him.
With that being said, I think we need to kill the trade Tyrese talk. It's just bad mojo all around. There's nothing wrong with Maxey and there's no reason to trade him. Defenses are simply loading up to stop him. It's an easy task for a defense when he's the only one out there who can handle the basketball or get a bucket, and yet he's averaging 29 a game with the current cast of steaming garbage he's surrounded with. Outside of Tobias Harris, this is the biggest collection of bums I've seen in a while on this team. Danuel House, the corpse of Marcus Morris? Pat Bev is still fun, but he shouldn't have the usage he's getting. I like Kelly Oubre, but you simply can't do anything with him. He's the definition of a losing player and it's obvious why nobody wanted him this past summer. Nic Batum is old AF and doesn't want to be here, Mo Bamba is a bum, Korkmaz hates his life, KJ Martin has been a disappointment, Robert Covington is washed like a pair of construction worker socks. None of these vets are worth keeping around at this point aside from Melton and he's quickly getting the injury-prone title attached to his name.
I got off topic which was the ludicrous idea that we should trade Maxey, but here's my take on things. I think we're going to try and fight this out. The goal is to win games, so I expect the team to try and do that. Prep yourself for more House, Korkmaz (hopefully he's traded), Morris, Bev, and Oubre. If Batum feels like basketballing he'll be out there too unless his wife needs him at home with the kids. Covington? Who TF knows and honestly who cares? Once the team realizes that it can't win with those guys, expect some phantom injuries to start popping up. After that we should be able to get a nice decent look at Smith, Council, and Springer in expanded roles. Nurse honestly needs to do it now, but there's no way in hell he will. Pair them with Maxey, Harris, Melton if he comes back, Reed, and Bev. I don't care if I ever see House or Marcus Morris play basketball again. Same goes for Covington and at this point Batum can go too. In short, none of our older vets matter without Joel Embiid here. It'll be a mess trying to get these guys to gel on the floor without him. Maybe I'm being cynical, but things look terrible at the moment and for some ridiculous reason, people are starting to throw out the idea that Maxey needs to be traded because he can't carry the team to a win with the likes of Danuel House, and the rest of the apathetic personalities on this roster. It's an insult to Maxey to have to shoulder this, but it's probably a good thing he's going through this right now. I think it'll actually make him a better player. Oh...He's averaging like half a turnover a game with this cast LOL.
