sign and trades are essentially the new free agency with so few teams having cap space. a player in tobias' situation could tell the sixers that he'd rather do a s&t over entering free agency and then the sixers get to recoup some value, tobias gets to go to a more preferred destination and/or make more money, etc.
it's also the reason why teams trading expirings before the trade deadline isn't as attractive because holding on to a player's bird rights is more valuable in the coming off season in a sign and trade as opposed to getting depressed value for half a season before the deadline. that's why i'm totally fine with the pistons holding on to their expiring vets because they'd get more value for them in the off season with longer contracts, plus they'd actually help the team the rest of this season.
