If you are saying Orlando lost this trade because Philly landed Tyrese Maxey, well, A) Orlando had the 15th pick and was never-ever going to keep the 21st pick also. And if you want to be revisionist here, Orlando could have drafted Maxey instead of Anthony.
And B - Kentucky guards always slide in the draft:Calipari's system has led to some really good Kentucky guards getting under-drafted over the past nine drafts. With the possible exception of De'Aaron Fox, all of these Kentucky guards would go higher in a redraft today:
Player Original draft slot
Cason Wallace 10
Tyrese Maxey 21
Immanuel Quickley 25
Tyler Herro 13
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander 11
De'Aaron Fox 5
Malik Monk 11
Jamal Murray 7
Devin Booker 13
SN link: Tyrese Maxey draft, revisited
The Magic had 21 wins in the season following the 2020 draft - why would they never ever keep the 15th and 21st pick? They literally just did that this last offseason..
Within 9 picks of the 21st pick in the 2020 draft - Maxey, Quickley, McDaniels, and Bane were taken.
How do you grade trades if you can’t factor in the future firsts that were traded? Don’t we factor in Franz in the Vuc trade?
Now factor in Fultz’ tenure in Orlando.. yes that trade is an obvious L
If the Magic keeps 21, I would think it would have been nearly certain the team drafts R. J. Hampton. And if not, Zeke Nnaji or Udoka Azubuike would have fit "need", which makes sense at 21. In conclusion: Maxey was not going to be a Magician at 21. But he made a lot of sense at 15, and many, many here thought so at the time.

Of course we lost the trade even ignoring how good Maxey has become. We gave up a first round pick for a player who has been overpaid and a negative asset for most of his time in Orlando and is likely to leave either for peanuts or for nothing in a few days or in the summer.
His first season here he got paid a few millions without playing a single minutes.
His next season was the only healthy one and he was decent but nothing more and the team took a step back from the previous year with him being the only significant change in the roster.
In 2020/2021 he only played 8 games.
Next season he played 18 games.
2022/23 was his best season and he still missed 20 games due to injury and was probably a bit overpaid.
22 - Zeke Nnaji
23 - Leandro Bolmaro
24 - R. J. Hampton
Let's not cherry pick on late firsts please. A team is trying to draft a rotational player at these slots. Yes Quickley went 25, but then:
26 - Payton Pritchard
27 - Udoka Azubuike
28 - Jaden McDaniels
29 - Malachi Flynn
oh, and yeh, Desmond Bane went 30.
On a redraft, three great players were at 21 of after, two OK players in Pritchard and McDaniels, and five horrible players. Seriously, who would have Orlando drafted at 21 that makes the Fultz trade a loss? Let's reminder ourselves Orlando was trying to dump Jonathon Simmons, and that cost some of this draft-asset loss.

Weltman absolutely calls the shots. Parker may bring something to Weltman but there is no way Parker gets the final vote on any deal. I’m fairly sure that is par for the course in the NBA though.

If you are forced to make a trade, then you end up getting the short end of the deal. Thus, if all the teams you spoke to end up giving you bad deal offers, then don't make a damned deal.

Management is quite boring tbh. I’ll be worried with Paolo and Franz are on their second contract and they havent done anything.
The rush is that this team is flawed, and I just pointed out that we have done absolutely nothing in the free agent market for 7 years and have botched the drafting process a few times.
At some point, guys like Paolo, Franz are going to see the lack of improvements and want to get out of here. Franz isn't a rookie anymore, dude is getting an extension next year.
I have no idea how anyone can be ok with an 8 year rebuild, and allowing management to sabotage retooling our team for the sake of being safe and sqeeking out more years in their positions. They have been using this "we are family" bullsh it to fool everyone into thinking this is some kind of brotherhood, so we don't make drastic moves and panic. But instead it's just so they don't have to take any swings at all. You don't evauluate for 7 years, that is nuts. Their entire job is to make moves that put us in a better position, not to create a fraternity of fun loving, god fearing, respectable non playoff caliber teams.
I personally don't "trust the proccess" with them leading. They are one Jabari Smith pick away from a perrenial lottery team.
I dont see choosing Paolo as like some big milestone, I made his draft thread, he was the obvious pick, especially for a franchise that had no margin for error. They lucked into the #1 pick, and him making us playin worthy.
So you suggest going for a quick fix?
For what? A title this year?
We’re basically in year 3 of the re-build. Not 8 years. Lol
Honestly, any move would be suprising. The way we ended last season, we already knew we were playing like a playin team. And what did we do? We brought in Joe ingles......
Whether its through free agency, or a trade, we need to get some value back for our expirings and get some sort of servicable guard (you already know all the names out there). We will be 30 mill under the cap going into the summer and have multiple expiring deals.
But my point isn't so much that they need to act now, It's more like they just haven't acted at all, so I don't think they should be fired, but I am not fighting to keep them around. And I would def lean towards the hot seat next year if they sit pat and we have to watch the likes of Cole and Fultz running the guard slots another year.
the trade market seems dead, and we seem pretty destined to go into the playoffs shooting poorly, put up a little fight and get blown out by the bucks or celtics. But the question is, will they pull the same card and evauluate or actually use some of these assets and cap space they have collected to improve this team?
People can call us young if they want, or this an early rebuild.
But you can not avoid the fact that, they put together a collective roster of the worst shooting team in the nba for 2 years in a row

I don’t think anyone is laying this at the feet of Parker right now.
Ultimately I’m not too sure how much decision making is in his hands. Was Hammond really the one calling the shots with Weltman making all the statements about “we felt this” and “we decided that”? Doubtful.
Weltman and co. get about a solid B/TBD based on their draft record here. It’s been better in recent years than previous. I’m not going to go into all the picks. You either get it or don’t.
Back to this thread. Nobody has actually seen Weltman and co. make a trade deadline move of consequence yet. However, they now know Paolo, Franz, and to a lesser extent Suggs are all mainstays. So what are they waiting for exactly? They have evaluated this group and the Magic are not in lotto territory anymore. The only way of making real adjustments will come at trades and free agency.

Not just that, all 3 of them, but especially Franz and Paolo will get exponentionally more expensive in near future, with that, it will be much harder to find good supporting cast around them and maintain all those players.
I think we can make healthy assumpsion that Weltman would rather pay several current players below league's value to "win" in his head, than pay actually difference maker his value, if that means he has to make trade where he could "lose".
Skybox said it best several days ago, Weltman is type of guy who does nothing and tells to himself how brilliant it was to do nothing.

Yea I don't think any of us know how the decision making/power is structured in the FO...which is kind of my point. We are just approaching all of this under the assumption that having Parker as our new GM is irrelevant and it will be business as usual for WeHam, when we don't actually know that. Hell, we don't even know who wore the power pants in the WeHam relationship. Considering Hammond is still around as "Senior Advisor to President of Basketball Operations", maybe Weltman needs him around? Lol.

We are waiting for a good trade offer obviously. Weltman likes to wait and makes deals near the end od deadline. He had good success doing that (Simmons deal, Vucevic trade). No players we want are already traded (maybe outside Rozier) so Weltman didnt make a mistake so far.
I like Parker, i would like to here more from him. He constructed our g league champion, he has player experience. I would like to think he has some real impact in our front office becouse we need some fresh ideas.

Weltman is good at 2 things. 1) Making people feel like he needs to be kept around in order for his vision to complete... and this will go on forever without his vision becoming complete. and 2) not spending ownership's money.
He's constantly talking about no timelines. He's constantly saying, "we'll see what's available". He loves saying stuff like, "You never know what will happen, but we think the future is bright". Stringing us along like the pied piper.
Just because we are starting to not suck doesn't mean he's done his job. We are last in the league in salary cap spending. We have never brought in a big named player via Trade or FA. It's like he's allergic to it. Building through the draft is fine, but we failed to be aggressive in moving up, failed to maximize draft capital by moving down and had to reach for players, failed to use draft picks to lure a veteran star, failed to hit on players who are now stars with other teams, failed to be successful in drafting second round studs... just failure after failure. It takes a real donkey GM to fail on the #1 overall pick and Franz was just lucky, imo.

There is a lot of overreaction now and ever but i seriously doubt magic core is set in stone.
There is Paolo, there is Franz and there are.... others.
Center seems more and more unreliable. Rim protection has top priority and our best rim protector is reserve, often injured forward...
NBA offense is based on going to the rim and shooting. Both Black and Suggs weakest area's are propably going to the rim in the halfcourt and shooting. I will be happy if one of them is starting when we contend.
Sixth man you mean Cole ? He is more of a 11th man.
I like where we are but we are certainly not as complete as you think.

Weltman will probably roll out of bed around 6. This will be him going to the office. 0 to 60 in, he's about to find out.

magic made a huge improvement last year, assuming they are gonna finish 50% in april this season will be another improvement season.
they have absolute no rush to make major moves, they'll have Black after an entire off-season of work,so as that #11 2023 pick to have minutes.
banchero, suggs, wagner and black will be on a rookie contract still, two of them will sign in autumn for big amount of money.
if you think this front office gonna make make major moves, you are gonna be disappointed(as you always do every deadline tbh):organic, patience, ecc.
P.S. as much as i don't personally trust that core,i reckonize there is a solid chance that could be the better way to develop it.

My worry is this was the spoken plan when Black was drafted. Black intimated on draft night that Weltman gave him assurances he would figure it out in regards to finding playing time (remember Black was publicly hesitant to come here due to our guard logjam). Telling Black the plan is to groom him to start next season, locking in our 2nd team guard in Cole, and then letting the chips fall where they may in the interim is so Weltman's style.
You are correct, though, it's not going to get it done.
