Can Detroit Sneak In for Murray last Second?

Post#1 » by eitanr » Wed Feb 7, 2024 6:14 pm

Weaver is a dead man walking and needs to show ownership he is getting some type of talent that can give the fans hope for next season in beyond.

Weaver has three choices:
1. Do nothing or (which I would prefer) move their current expiring deals who has positive value for assets. Unfortunately if he does this route and doesn't produce a talent like Tobias Harris or better in FA (unlikely or will need to overpay) he likely gets fired at start of the year.

2. Trade for Tobias now. This would cost Bogy, Burks and Morris, to name a few but more likely secures Harris longer term, albiet at an overpay. This probably costs him an additional year as GM, pending on the other FA moves - maybe a vet PG. Still, if the team (likely) underperforms yet again due to the roster construction around the youth and does not compete for a play-in, he gets canned next off-season.

3. Go for broke. Try and make a trade that secures to talents that could fit certain core youth long term. This may just get Troy an extension.

So how would scenario 3 work? Detroit would need to re-enter the Murray sweeps.

Murray Concept:
To BKN: Ivey, AJ Griffin, Wiseman
To ATL: DFS, Royce Oneale, 2 future 1sts via BKN (i.e. future PHX firsts via KD/Bridges trade)
To DET: D. Murray

Again, this only makes sense IF Weaver can also get T. Harris, which would be done either straight up or via a 3 way with Indiana - but let's make is straight for cleanliness:
Bogy, Burks, Monte Morris
FOR
T. Harris

Detroit then has the following group post deal:
PF T. Harris/ I. Stewart
SF A. Thompson/ D. Gallinari
C J. Duren/ M. Muscala
SG C. Cunningham/ J. Harris
PG D. Murray/ M. Sasser

Definitely a thin bench, but Detroit would still have some cap space and a top 4 pick to bolster this group next year. The move pigeon holes the Pistons into low playoff seed ceiling next year pending Cade's development...but it secures a strategy for Weaver to get that extension long term.

Feels bad for Detroit fans . Ownership put them all in a can’t win situation by letting weaver see through this trade deadline.

If ownership didn't want their GM to be buying they could veto any trade. Weaver is doing what ownership wants.

Brunson: So what are you paid to do?
Hart: Run around like an idiot during the game and f*** s*** up!

I like the idea of DET not rolling over and dying, but I question whether another ball-dominant scoring guard is the right target with Cade and Ivey and Sasser in-house. I understand that Murray can contribute in other ways, but the ATL experiment makes me think that's not his best fit...I feel the same about NYK chasing him - Brunson doesnt' seem a lot different than Trae, in that regard.
