Klay to the Motor City
Klay seems like he's lost his confidence. That interview after being benched even made me sad. He needs a new team, and no contender in their right mind would take him and give him the money he'll want. The Pistons though, with little chance to sign a marquee guy and with a ton of room make the move and bring him on:
Det: Boji/Killian/Joe Harris
Warriors: Klay Thompson
The Dubs get some immediate help in the form of Boji, some youth in the form of Killian, and roll the dice that maybe Joe Harris can start shooting like he did in BRK.
Detroit wants to get Klay in the building to start selling him early on staying with the team. Paying him to offer shooting, solid vet leadership in the locker room and basically help Monty teach these kids how to play winning ball.

Re: Klay to the Motor City
If that’s all it takes to give Klay a tryout for the rest of the season, why not?
I’d just be cautious when handing him a contract based of his health, age and recent inconsistency.

Re: Klay to the Motor City
Klay is finished as an impact player. I imagine his future is a taxpayer MLE guy if he still wants to play on the playoffs. Not sure Detroit is a place he’d want to re-sign. Detroit can get an actual asset for Bogi.

Sure I do that for GS. With a heavy heart of course, but this is probably the best we could hope for in the current circumstances.

Nah. Cali boy would never stay here unless we offered him twice the money of anyone else, which would be unbelievably stupid. If the Dubs move on from him (doubtful) and he still wants to play, he’ll end up with the Lakers, Kings, or Clips.

I like the idea for both but I can’t see GS trading Klay. I actually think he resigns there, albeit with a pay cut.

Re: Klay to the Motor City
So Detroit trades more useful players in the hope they can sell the worse player on another contract?
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Re: Klay to the Motor City
I agree with other Piston's fans that keeping Klay doesn't make sense because it would require a pointless overpay. IMO Detroit should consider which asset they consider more valuable: the bird rights to Klay, or Bogie.
Klay's bird rights could very well return a small asset or two as a SnT, or end up as pure cap space.
Bogie's worth is probably highest right now
I think Bogie has a little more value to Detroit, but it's close, and it would only take a decent SRP to bridge the value gap for me

Re: Klay to the Motor City
I'd trade expirings like Killian and Harris for him if Golden State attached something we actually wanted. Bojan has more value than that, though, IMO. Klay is a negative asset at this point, for me.

Having Boji has done exactly what in the locker room? Congrats on the win yesterday, but that was probably the high point of the season I'm guessing. A season in which you set the losses in a row record.......
Now as a Suns fan, I know that Monty pain. He needs solid vets in the room to help him out. If you can get Klay to buy in, then he's a great fit for you. Shooting, defense and professionalism are the things you need. As for the money, well Siakam and OG are both off the market and I don't see pg13 signing with Detroit if he even makes UFA.
Klay is a future HOF with 4 rings who's still averaging a decent ppg clip. The best vet you can bring in without touching any core young player. I actually think he'd stay too, after being in the city for awhile.
I think it's fair to ask for a 2nd round pick back from GS though. Can add that in.

I think Golden State does Klay a solid and lets him pick his destination in the offseason if this is all they'd get in return
investigate Adam Silver

Those teams can't pay him more than the MLE as they are all well over the cap. Also, he can't start on any as they have better and younger players. Detroit offers a starting gig and they actually need a player like him in the locker room. His skills fit them what they need well.

What do you predict for Klays next contract?

That's a great question because it will have a big impact on how much value Klay could return in a SnT. Lakers and Kings would be possibilities, but the Clips are out because they will be way over the hard cap assuming they keep PG
Klay will be a UFA, and I don't like Detroit's odds of retaining him unless it's an overpay. Bogie is a TO on a fair deal, so he offers more flexibility. We'll have somewhere in the $50-75M range of cap space in July, so we don't need more.
To me, the deal is close, and I'd take it for Detroit if we got a decent SRP out of it.

Klay is also expiring, and better than Killian and Harris

With how he's been playing this season, an exile to the league's worst team is warranted

I'm sure they're both fine in the locker room, but I don't think either is a firey leader type. Klay's defense is probably still better. But there's not much of a chance he stays to make a run for a double digit win total next season. In fact, his attitude could rapidly deteriorate if he's dumped in Detroit. Pretty sure he wouldn't be happy.

I think the contract is unique.
Klay isn't gonna get the money or playing time on virtually any other team. Detroit isn't gonna be able to get someone with Klay's HOF credentials-who can still put up 17ppg. That's why I think the 2 are a good match.
Which is why it's key to get him in now and sell him on his role with the team and the DET itself. I'm actually born in Henry Ford and was raised off Gratiot, so I'm well aware of the city. I think he'll resign if acquired.
Length-wise. I'd say something shorter but with good money would work for both sides. Pistons need someone to kick this rebuild into gear and help Monty. Klay wants 1 last payday. So, I'd think a 3 year deal is great for both sides. Detroit has the money and won't be able to spend it, so I'd make it for between 100-120.
3/110 is an overpay, but not crazy. Klay won't get that much anywhere else and Detroit will still have tons of room left regardless. You'll need to get him on the team 1st I think to sell him on how much he is needed.

Re: Klay to the Motor City
So a team that already needs to play Cade, Ivey, Sasser, and Ausar should pay 3/110 to an average efficiency volume scorer that’s really struggling to play defense? Because leadership?
No thank you.
