seems odd to give up a first to then buy him out

Yeah, that's partly Kidd but I think it's almost more Luka?
How? Luka isn't the GM or the owner. They ran Brunson out of town, decided Dimwitty and THJ were better than Porzingis, gave bums like Powell and Kleber big bucks, and spent the MLE on Grant Williams. Then to make matters worse they brought in Kidd as HC. Other than lucking into Luka and drafting Lively, their FO has been a complete disaster.

I don't disagree with most of your points. Lots of bad choices by the Mavs (which seems like a bad organization generally given all the other problems they've had). But I think Luka's in that early-ish career space where he's willing to play one way and one way only. Are they feeding into that too much? I don't know. But I see lots of Harden in Luka and I hate that kind of basketball.
I guess Kyrie might save them. LOL.

Not a perfect player, but good trade for the Sixers.

Bad * trade. He will be on injured list for most of the games. Will play 4 out of 30 games ratio
