Does management not see we should be doing everything possible to keep 2024 pick?

Post#1 » by nivisi9 » Fri Feb 9, 2024 1:50 am

Just seeing how bad this team is now, does management not see this as critical?

Without our 2024 1st (likely top 5ish pick) we have no other significant way to improve the roster or add to our core.

Without this we are realistically talking about 2 yrs of pain before potentially adding only a single core piece with our 2025 pick.

We are currently 6-7th with a very strong possibility of being able to keep our pick if we can catch 5th (in reach)...

Isn't this the most important objective currently? Should management not be doing everything possible to keep it?

I think the clear goal here now should be to keep both 2024 and 2025 1st's (with how bad we are) and convey in 2026 when we should be a team on the rise (hopefully)

not to mention the alternative is likely the worse case scenario, giving up the 7th pick.

Nope, we're tied with Memphis now for 6th worse and they've essentially lost their entire rotation to injuries and are playing guys who should be in the G league. We aren't going to sink lower than they are. It's in our best interest to convey now and focus on that Pacers 2024 and the Detroit pick we have in this draft.

Raptors are prioritizing development

But they won't setup funky lineups just to tank and hurt barnes development

Masai is still probably eyeing that play-in spot. Gotta get these young players some play-in tournament experience.

Technically, it doesn't make a difference to us if we convey the 2024 7th pick or 15th pick

No, it is a weak draft, highly likely we are getting a rotation player which won't change our future.
I hope we are more looking into the 2025 draft, as our current core isn't a .500 team anyway.

What a deceptive term and flawed ideology. Culture is the sunlight that will make the seeds grow but when you don't have quality seeds you won't get quality fruit.

They traded away the only pure PG the team had..

They picked up another development project.

This team is going to lose a ton of games with these moves.

No. That ship has sailed and you have negligible impact on the lottery odds.

Yet Masai traded for extra picks in a terrible draft. Genius move.

Those same people will waive those picks around as gold when talking about what great trades Masai made.

Some people should just post and say we have no opinions of our own and blindly support every move Masai makes. It'll be easier to read things here lol.

It doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things when you think about it because at the end of the day we're at the mercy of the lottery ball. We could potentially get 5th and fall to 7th and lose the pick anyways. Or we finish 7th and move up to 3rd. No amount of winning or losing changes things for us. On top of that we already have 2 picks in this draft, which is a weak draft anyways. The Pacers pick is going to fall between 17-21 and we have the 31st pick from Detroit. I personally would rather convey the pick this year so that we don't have the protections not be enough in a better draft in 2025.

We essentially became younger after these trades anyways and in no way is this team better defensively now then when they were before the trade. We're still going to lose games but we were never going to lose at a pace to guarantee keeping our pick. That ship sailed a long time ago.

A competent franchise wouldn’t have traded the pick in the first place.

That's because we let an All Star / All NBA PF enter walk year without trading earlier

lol, weak draft yet we traded for 3 more picks in the weak draft (3 worse picks than what we gave up for Poeltl). Can’t wait for the next round of mental aerobics. Perhaps they’ll tell us we want lower picks since their salaries will be lower.

Not true. Being 7th gives us like a 45% chance of keeping the pick. Finishing 5th worst increases odds to 65%. Yes it’s still possible for us to stink it up and finish 5th worst. The trade itself was terrible but trying to win with nothing to play for is just as silly.

As so well said in the classic movie, Dirty Work. Don’t jump to conclusions. There is a reason these guys are NBA Execs. They know what’s going on. Unfortunately we are not

But it doesn't matter we're not going to bad enough to out tank the Hornets/Portland/Memphis. Didn't you see what transpired yesterday? Unless we lose multiple players to injury our position isn't going to change much plus you have to pray on the lottery balls falling your way, regardless of probabilities.
