Why is that so many role players seem to struggle around Luka? Is this 100% a front office issue, or is it reasonable to hypothesize that it's extremely difficult to build a successful team around a ball-dominant guard whose offense is brilliant but whose defense is questionable-to-bad? Aren't we seeing a similar thing happening in Atlanta?
DJJ and Exum are having career years. Dinwiddie has been rough everywhere except for Dallas with Luka. DFS had his best years with Luka. Luka sustained Bullock and Powell’s careers for years.
The only player better in the league at elevating his teammates is Jokic.
Also you clearly haven’t been watching Dallas this season. Luka is a plus on defense.
You're wrong. I have League Pass, so I've watched the Mavs several times this year. He's not a plus on defense. That's what my eyes tell me, and the numbers back that up. He's often slow to get back in transition. Struggles to defend the PnR. He's decent in isolation when he's trying, but that's about it, and he's usually not matched up against the opponent's best player. Defense is his chance to rest, and his overall defensive impact is negative.
I already said that some role players do better with Luka, but there are a lot of examples where they don't as well. Not a controversial take in the least. The issue is that for many Luka fans, if the role players do worse, it's the fault of the role player or the front office. If they do better, it's all because of Luka.
Exum? Absolutely you are correct.
DFS? Yep.
Dinwiddie? Yep.
Hardaway Jr? About the same as he was in Atlanta.
DJJ? I'd argue that he had a better season with the Heat, he's scoring more in DAL because he's shooting more.
Grant? Nope.
Kyrie? Nope.
Bullock? Nope.
KP? Nope.
Brunson? Nope.
Richardson? Nope.
"The only player better in the league at elevating his teammates is Jokic" is just a laughable statement. The Mavs last season finished as the 11th seed, 6 games under .500. A guy that's a consensus top 5 player on this board couldn't elevate his team to a .500 record? Lol. Not much elevating going on there imo
More likely than not, a year from now Mavs fans will be talking about how much of a disappointment Washington and Gafford are, and how bad the front office is.
Having league pass does not equate to having watched mavericks games. Which I and many Mavs fans have watch every game this year. Luka can still be slow to get back on defense and defending the pick and roll is certainly not a strength but he is not the defensive weak link that he was in the past. He is also a solid help side defender, does sleep on that end, is good in iso, and has been the teams most consistent defensive rebounder.
It can be true that Mavs give credit to Luka and blame the player around him when thing go wrong, so go back down that list and figure if it’s Luka’s fault.
DJJ is thriving on offense with Luka, DJJ has 4 20+ point games in his entire career before coming to Dallas. And then had like 5 in the first 30 games. That’s the Luka effect, any argument that Luka isn’t elevating him is just flat wrong.
Bullock was a starter that last 2 seasons and player 40 minutes a night in the WCF 2 years ago, he is out of the league now. Luka easily elevated him.
Grant has no one to blame but himself. Luka created the open shots for him, Grant couldn’t hit them, he got more open shots then he’s ever gotten this year and his percentage went down. That not on Luka. Dallas found out quick why Grant was getting DNP-CD real fast.
Kyrie isn’t a role player, but he’s playing as well as he has in the last few years aside from the injuries, which I shouldn’t have to explain to you isn’t Luka’s fault. Yeah Kyrie’s scoring is down 2 points from his nets days, but he’s also playing 5 minutes less per game. I don’t know about you, but I’d better you and infinite amount of money that if Kyrie player 5 more minutes per game he’d score 2 more points.
KP can eat ****, he admitted to actively throwing the Mavs playoff games against the clippers because he was mad the Luka was better than him and it was a Batman and Robin situation. If he’s not man enough to deal with that, it’s his fault.
Brunson was great with Luka, he broke out in year 5, but he would’ve done the same in Dallas considering that Luka and Kyrie have co-existed just fine for a year.
What exactly has Richardson done in the **** league since leaving Dallas? Were his stats better as a backup on the spurs who were the worst team in the league? If we’re going to count garbage stats against Luka then this conversation is dumb and dead in the water.
Yes we all know that the defense collapsed for Dallas last year. Luka also took the Clippers to 7 games twice while TH **** J was his 2nd best player. He also lifted a team of G-leaguers to the WCF, yeah he had Brunson, but Dinwiddie was his 3rd best player, Dinwiddie is the same guy who has been ran out of town 2 different NBA in the last 2 years.
