Holy ****, what a frustrating experience. Wifi cuts out as they are lining up for 2nd and ~ 6 at the 30/35, had to restart, by the time it came back I am watching Chiefs celebrate. What the ****.

Defense played a hell of a game overall, but in the end it was 2 of their long lasting struggles that did them in.
3rd down woes, and not being clutch. If they make a stop on either of KC's last 2 possessions the 49ers are Super Bowl champions

Re: Super Bowl 58: 49ers vs Chiefs
Basically in the red zone, twice on about 3rd and 4, the Chiefs brought pressure, which should not have been a surprise. One was their last possession of regulation, where they ended up settling for a FG, and the other was in OT, again had to settle for FG.
No good play call or maybe missing pass protection assignments.
That was the game right there.
Spagnolo's play calls are not a surprise. Kyle had to have some hot reads to mix it up, to keep the defense honest. In OT, Jennings broke open towards the flag but Purdy didn't have the time. Again, it seemed like he knew the pressure was coming and they tried to protect but didn't.
Or worse, he didn't anticipate it after Spags blitzed in a similar situation on the 49ers last possession in regulation.
In contrast, Chiefs converted some key 3rd downs, against pressure. One of those was to get the ball out quick to McKinnon on wide blitzes from both sides.
Also, the Chiefs blitzes got instant pressure on those key 3rd down plays. So either they were unprepared or didn't anticipate it or the pass protection was lacking. But again, they didn't try hot reads but rather patterns which took time to develop. I think Jennings made a double move. It was a quick double move but still taking longer than a slant or a screen say.

Also, losing Greenlaw allowd Kelce to pick up several chunk gains and 1st downs after Dre went down. Kelce was invisible before that.

Ehh, if you are going to boil it down to 1 single play its on Luter's kicked punt.
Not trying tto absolve Moody by any means, but You could make a case that the missed PAT, might have prolonged the game. If KC was down 4, Reid would have went for it on 4th at the 6th. Which very well could have resulted in a KC TD.
In any event, its all woulda coulda shoulda. 9ers had more than enough ample opportunity to win the game
Could just go with firing the Unspecial Teams coach. Whether its the muffed punt or the missed XP, the fact that our special teams are anything but special did us in.
And Kyle's play-calling has to be addressed as well. He knows that KC blitzes more than anyone and was always caught off-guard whenever they did it.

I made mention of it recently, but the 49ers had pretty good health luck this season. Might be quite awhile until they have this good of a health year again.
That might start with Greenlaw already missing all of next season

Hard to put blame in any one place. Failed to make plays when they had to

2013: Down by 5 with 2:39 left, but set up 1st & goal at the 7 yard line.
2020: Up by 10 with 8:33 left
2024: Up by 3 with 1:53 left, then up by 3 in overtime
Crushing devastation.

Re: Super Bowl 58: 49ers vs Chiefs
Defense couldn't one damn stop when it mattered the most. They had two chances
Why is Wilks playing 8 yards off on 2nd and 14? Cool just give them an easy 7 yards instead of playing up and forcing them to make a play

Team needs a big boy QB. The cute but limited underdog thing has run its course.

Not only that, but we need a new coach and a system that allows for drop back passing. This isn’t 1998

I don’t know him, but I’m serious that we need a reboot.
I would rather be a bad rebuilding team than what we are now

In this era of enforced parity due to the salary cap, all SBs are now close, usually 1-score games. I guess the fans like that.
The 49ers of the '80s and the early '90s blew out their opponents in the SB.
That and I think the officiating biases towards not allowing game to get out of control.
NFL is the richest league so they're going to get big TV ratings regardless of whether there's parity or a couple of dominant teams.
You can say smaller market teams like the Steelers engineered the cap to dismantle dynasties like the 49ers. Or the league decided to control salaries, which means under the cap, the stars who earn big money, they're cut or forced to restructure and there's heavier reliance on players on rookie contracts.
Does that result in better football? Well it results in closer games.

That rule on punts needs to be revised. A guy is just blocking and it nips his ankle and the punting team gets it back? Just ca ll it down where touched.
