I wonder if the new Prez will continue the structure of having both Gute and MLF report directly to him.
From what I know of Policy, he seems the logical choice.

I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Yup.
This is the most unique executive position in the NFL. The League view the Packer CEO as an owner avatar - except that's not quite accurate either.
I think Murphy excelled at the marketing and infrastructure side of the organization, but the team ops has been bumpier. To be fair, Gute and MLF aren't high mileage as the top dogs in their roles and Rogers ego and clout made things complicated. Also, to my mind anyway, there had been a kind of sense of a lame duck inertia for a time (because of Murphy's future retirement), until MLF finally dumped Barry and now there's sense of starting over on defense to go with the promising future for the Offense. I do wonder how much influence Murphy had on that firing/hiring process. At least publicly, it seems he kept out of it.

I know people seem to hate that reporting structure but I think its fine. Coach can play whatever players he thinks are best and not for the sake of justifying a GMs draft selection/FA signing.MickeyDavis wrote:I wonder if the new Prez will continue the structure of having both Gute and MLF report directly to him.

Key is that both the coach and GM get along and have the same vision around the building/players who fit the scheme.

No money, so do not expect any big FA signing this offseason.

Don’t ruin that for me yet. The football gods will find a way to make that work. He’s gonna take a major discount to come win a title in Green Bay

Savage quietly improved last season, despite a rough game against SF. He's gone from being a disappointment to being a serviceable starter, which is a lot better than the rest of the safeties on the roster. The draft capital they invested in him is a sunk cost, so you have to evaluate him based on what they would have to pay him, not where they drafted him. I'd keep him if the price is reasonable.
Owens has some potential as a box safety in a 4-2-5. I'd keep him as well, but I'd like to have 3 safeties better than him on the roster. Johnson will get another year to prove himself, but ideally he should go into camp as the last safety on the active roster.
That means they should retain Savage and add two safeties better than Owens, and ideally both of those should be good free safeties who can cover a lot of ground IMO.

Nijman was surprisingly effective filling in on both sides of the OL for a couple years, and I had been counting on him to be a nice depth piece for years. I wonder what happened last year. Goes to show that OL's can really be up and down. I remember Myers and Runyan being much better at first as well. Consistency is hard to come by.

Runyan regressed, and Nijman and Myers were inconsistent. Still, it will surprise me if both Nijman and Runyan are allowed to walk, as the line depth would be real thin. If they're gone, that really does point to drafting some potentially more "sure-thing" linemen, or targeting linemen in FA (with limited Cap cash). I don't know what to make of those two alternatives.

Maybe with their departures it means we'll be dipping our toes in the free agent market after all?

I don't know the exact cap math but yeah it they could sign like one good starting S at the expense of letting these depth guys go I see the logic there.Ron Swanson wrote:Maybe with their departures it means we'll be dipping our toes in the free agent market after all?
I also wonder if it will be used to restructure and bring back guys like Jones and Preston.
Funny mid season I didn't think either Jones or Preston would be back but now I think Jones is nearly a lock and I'd put Preston over 50% to return, he's solid and a vet leader they like having around.

Yeah, getting Jones and Preston back on reasonable extensions/restructures has to be priority #1. Neither of those guys are breaking the market so it should be doable, then whatever cap leftover just save for future extensions and possibly grab a veteran Safety or CB. This is where I'll once again hammer home how dumb it is that the NFL does free agency two months before the draft though....

Yeah that's something the players association will never allow, much better for vet FAs to have teams bidding in them before the draft starts filling up spots.Ron Swanson wrote:Yeah, getting Jones and Preston back on reasonable extensions/restructures has to be priority #1. Saw somewhere that Hafley and LeFluer are having a press conference today starting at 2:45. Lost the link thou, so hope it’s accurate. Been looking forward to this since the hire.
