Back To The Future - Lauri Bird
Hornets/Jazz trade next deadline:
Miles Bridges
2027 Hornets 1st unprotected
2027 Heat 1st (lottery-protected or conveys unprotected 2028)
2027 Mavs 1st (top-2 protected)
Utah was rumoredly interested in Miles Bridges at the deadline. Lauri will have one-half season on his contract heading towards a supermax. Jazz lose production from Miles to Lauri, but further stock the draft cupboard that can compete with the Thunder.
Hornets find a #1 scorer who complements a young core. They can still make selections in 2025 & 2026 to go along with the high lottery pick in 2024 (Nik Topic?)
Nikola Topic/Tre Mann
LaMelo Ball/Nick Smith Jr.
Brandon Miller
Lauri Markannen/Grant Williams
Mark Williams
Miles Bridges
2027 Hornets 1st unprotected
2027 Heat 1st (lottery-protected or conveys unprotected 2028)
2027 Mavs 1st (top-2 protected)

Re: Back To The Future - Lauri Bird
Is the assumption here that Bridges has signed a long term contract? I don’t think that’s going to add value necessarily.
This feels quite light for what a lot of Lauri discussions have involved. And too far off to really entertain the hypothetical.

Re: Back To The Future - Lauri Bird
Too many variables between now and then. what contract is Bridges signed to? are LaMelo and Mark Williams healthy? Are the Hornets in a position to push for the playoffs if they add Lauri? Could Lauri leave in 2 months?
Another question I have is if a team is far enough under the cap, can Lauri have his contract re-negotiated and then extended at a much higher number? If that's the case, I'd go for this deal in the offseason (sans Bridges as I'm assuming Utah doesn't value him) and add some value.

Re: Back To The Future - Lauri Bird
Utah isn't trading Lauri unless he asks out. If they were interested in Bridges, it likely has to do with the idea he might come cheap because of his history. This offer doesn't qualify as coming cheap. Their interest would be to add a player to Markkanen/Kessler, not to swap these players.
New York said Mitchell wasn't the guy you trade the sink for, then they traded it for Mikal, lol.

Lauri would realistically have to wait 6 months before renegotiating his deal after a trade unless the new CBA changed that.
I can’t see Lauri being in Utah and not have been renegotiated come September. Ainge shouldn’t let him play out his contract, trade him if he won’t turn his current deal into a 4yr150-160 or whatever amount..

Re: Back To The Future - Lauri Bird
Bridges is not even close to a centerpiece for a Lauri deal. Setting aside any conversation about feelings, someone who violates a restraining order is not reliable enough to bet your future on. I would want several picks from Charlotte unprotected, at least 3 (considering that they hardly ever make the playoffs), but probably 4. For Charlotte, I think cashing in their draft assets and young players is a dumb idea right now.

The #1 priority for the Jazz this offseason is to renegotiate and extend Lauri. I expect that this will be finalized as early as possible.

I see I reason for the Jazz to trade Lauri unless he wants out, and if he wants out I doubt Charlotte will stand a better chance of resigning him.

What if you flip this and say Collin Sexton and 3 FRP with two of them being protected for Lamelo?

3 good firsts is light? I get it depends on contract for Bridges on whether he has positive or negative value, but those are 2 pretty good picks and one great one.
In reality though seems like the Jazz would have no interest in trading him.

Markennen will be expiring, and unextendable due to small contract, so the team trading for him will not pay premium.
This is exactly why it's in both parties interest, Jazz and Markannen to do renegotiate and extend, he secures his bag, Jazz secure him long term or secure premium return for him.
Defense wins draft lotteries!

Miles Bridges could be in jail by next year’s trade deadline depending on how his felony domestic violence and child abuse cases go.
He has no value.

You’re about 3 quality firsts short.

Have you ever heard of a player being traded for 6 firsts?

When you’re not receiving players of value, I’m yeah.

I don't see 3 good firsts here. I see 1 that had a decent chance (Charlotte), 1 with an outside chance (Dallas), and 1 with a 'meh' chance (Miami - lottery protected, plenty of time to build a team around Herro/Bam)
I don't think it is horrible if Lauri were demanding out, specifically to Charlotte. Otherwise I think there would be much better options.

Harden was traded to Brooklyn for 4 firsts and 4 swaps.

Re: Back To The Future - Lauri Bird
If Lauri contract is renegotiated this summer and extended Grizz can offer top 5 draft pick 24, 25/27/29 1st uprotected, and salary fillers for Lauri.

He likely will want a full max with max raises. He very likely would not be trade eligible next season if he renegotiates.

I'm only interested if he can be extended over the summer, next year we should be going into the season healthy and with our roster intact ready to compete.
