Thad Young thread

Post#1 » by Saberestar » Tue Feb 13, 2024 4:05 pm

Free agent F Thaddeus Young is finalizing a deal to join the Phoenix Suns, sources tell ESPN. More veteran, frontline depth for the Suns’ stretch and playoff run. Young has spent the past two-plus seasons with the Toronto Raptors.

Great news.

Funny after all the trade rumors for both Thad and Eric Gordon the past few years they end up signing both to min deals.

Phoenix was allowed to sign him because his $8M pre-existing salary was below the $12.4M non-tax mid level exception.

He gets to double dip on what is owed by Brooklyn and the prorated veteran minimum in Phoenix.

Not a bad depth pickup. All we need is Lamarcus Aldridge and we’ve completed the late 2010s Suns fan wishlist.

Sounds like someone that should be washed out two years ago, but after checking his stats when he was mentioned as potential target he didn't look done. Is he getting Bol Bol's or Eubanks' minutes ?

Definitely Eubanks minutes.

He can defend backup Cs with his size and on offense he isn't a floor spacer but he is a very good passer and has a high basketball IQ so he can play the Nurkic's role coming from the bench.

Thad Young spent 96% of his 350 minutes this season at center. Really like this pickup for the Suns. While it might not move the needle for them, gotta improve on the margins

His lack of shooting makes him hard to play at the 4 with another big, but you never know. Hes been a really good small ball 5 on offense in the past. If he has any legs left for defense he can be helpful there.

Yeah Im not sure he'll be in the regular rotation but he could come in handy when they go small ball with him at the 5 and KD at the 4.

Best player available imo and someone I've wanted Suns to get for a long time. We desperately needed another big that can pass for this team to function.

His best days are WAY behind him. I just checked his stats he’s averaging 5 ppg, 3 boards and 2 assists in 15 min. Grr I thought he was better. Very disappointed!

"I'm on my fifth contract. Now that should tell y'all something. You ain't gotta be a 20 PPG scorer in order to have a 16 year career."

These are the type of guys you want on your team if you’re trying to win a championship

I mean he's likely not available on a buyout if he isn't on his last legs lol

If we needed him to average 15 ppg, we'd be screwed.

Yeah if you need 40 minutes a game he's not your guy. If you need like 40 minutes over the course of a playoff series he probably has that left in him.

Besides all the obvious needs he fills, we also just needed someone that's **** smarter on defense and doesn't make mistakes.

Add the legit size and length, yeah, I'm excited. Wish we had him 3-4 years earlier.

Do the Suns still have that fountain of youth or did Sarver take that with him to Scottsdale when he sold the team?

I was quite happy this past offseason about how we got a bunch of guys in their 20s. But they kinda blew. Lot of old legs though now that could be our undoing once the playoffs comes around and we have to play a shorter rotation of 8 guys. But it is what it is, there's a give and take because we didn't draft well and manage our assets. We could have kept Goodwin/KBD/Yuta (and who else did we trade  already forgot the 4th dude) and they could **** the bed like they were all season long even though they're all under 30.

Is him better than KBD, Goodwing, Metu and Yuta the Yuseless? Then everything is fine.
