This is nonsensical.

How are you paying maxes to SGA, Jalen, and Chet, paying the role players you need to complement those three... And paying Giddey?

SGA, Jalen, and Chet will make up 80% of the cap. The luxury tax is around 120% of the cap, the second apron is around 130% of the cap. Giddey is a terrible complement to SGA and Jalen as you mostly need shooters around those two. Giddey has no chance of staying with OKC unless every team realizes he's so bad that he signs for very little.

I think OKC matches a market offer for Giddey because it makes financial sense

It's 2 seasons away from when OKC will be looking at having 3 max contracts (when Holmgren and Williams are in their 5th season). If they end up in a situation of having to shed talent to reduce luxury tax bills, they will have until the 2027 trade deadline 3 years from now

Of course, if someone offers an overpay for Giddey, OKC might decline to match -- but then an overpay by definition makes Giddey a bad contract.

Giddey sticks out in a bad way like a sore thumb on that Thunder team. He doesn't have the athleticism to be a good defender. He's not a good shooter. Maybe I'm missing something and need to dig into the advanced stats but from the eye test OKC looks like a better team with him off the floor.

I suspect Giddey's trade value isn't great, but if you're not prepared to match a market offer in RFA, you can always trade that player to a team who will.

He's no longer particularly good, but good vet depth for the Suns.

Daryl Morey called Pelinka to probe on a James trade and was immediately told that James wasn't available. In fact, Pelinka responded by asking Morey if Joel Embiid was available, sources said.

Curious what this deal would have looked like. CP3 + Wiggins + picks/prospects for Bron and a filler contract (Vincent?) seems like the most likely structure IMO.

Has there been a trade where a team gave away the best player and took on bad money?

OKC took on some questionable contracts for PG and Westbrook but they got flooded with draft picks and players, as LAL would here

Yeah, I don't think it would take that much to flip Wiggins for useless expirings either, there were plenty of offers floating around the board before the deadline.

I'm more curious what the picks/prospects would have looked like tbh.

Which one of Chris Paul, Gallo or Shai do you consider bad contracts?

Can you tell me some? The lakers are on repeater tax territory right now and I struggle to see a scenario where the return is good enough for them to stay there. You are essentially describing a scenario where the lakers trade Lebron and still prepare to contend to pay that kid of money.

CP3 and Gallo definitely were at the time, CP3 looked really washed that last year in Houston, though he played himself into just slightly positive trade value and a new contract over the following years.

I’d agree with you if you had said okc got the best player and shed bad money in that trade.

Chris Paul for Jordan Poole just happened.
Dallas got Tyson Chandler for their championship run and dumped Matt Carroll back on Charlotte
Your Lakers got Howard and dumped Bynum and his broken knees

It's just not that rare. It's does the deal overall make sense. This one didn't, but often it does.

Klay is the piece I'd expect traded for LeBron. In combination with Kuminga, Podz, Moody.

Klay has wanted to be a Laker, his family team because of his father.

GSW wouldn't pay Klay and LeBron for multiple years.

Bynum was an expiring contract. The Tyson Chandler deal you mention was a cost cutting measure for Charlotte with Dampier’s contract, which is very much keeping with Jordan’s habit of being cheap. I don’t think there’s any team that would entertain a move taking themselves out of competitiveness and keep themselves in repeater tax. Even bad GMs/owners are smarter than that when it comes to money.
