Raptors nearing a multi year deal with Olynyk

Smart move by the Raps in my opinion. Good vet to have around to help stabilize things.

Discuss.

Glad we got him when he’s 40 years old and we’re tanking

There are only 2 teams in the league that rank in the top 6 in offensive and defensive efficiency: the Golden State Warriors and the Toronto Raptors.

The Raptors did not trade for free-agent-to-be Kelly Olynyk as a rental. Quite the contrary, in fact.

You can expect an announcement shortly — “maybe in the next couple of weeks,” one team official said this week — on a contract extension for the Scarborough-born Olynyk, obtained from Utah a week ago. Whether it’s a straight two-year deal or two years plus an option, the Raptors want to lock up the 32-year-old as quickly as they can.

Already rumoured to be a 3 year few days ago which it probably is. Nice we can retain some meaningful depth that also fits the style of play we want.

3-year deal would be fine with me, he'll be on the decline though

I wonder how much moneys we're talking

I like Olynyk. He's a nice piece to a puzzle. Hopefully he can stay healthy

Why do this now? There is no need to rush signing him - keep things open right up to the draft.

Great move to secure a solid, good character guy who can mentor our youth while still contributing off the bench.

Personally would not mind if we did a longer deal if it means we can bring down the yearly average.

Like I would prefer 4/40 over 2/30. Contracts that small generally are not gonna hamper you much. Thad and OPJ for example were small and pretty much deadweight and they were just salary filler.
What an absolute failure and disaster this franchise is, ran by one of the most incompetent front offices in the league.

cannot sign a 4 year extension right now(since he was recently traded), max is 2 year, max is 5% raise.

so the maximum possible extension Olynyk can sign right now is 2 years apx 26 mil.

Smart house-keeping move to get rid of his potential 23 million caphold. If he signs for close to the same amount as now, that frees up between 5 to 10 million to spend on free agents.

Kelly is a perfect backup C so I would be happy with this even though he is about a decade too old to be a core piece. This also makes it easier to trade Poeltl if an awesome offer comes in for him because at least they would have someone to fill the gap to set screens and rebound for a bit while they look for a longer term solution. Those few weeks when Poeltl was out were really painful and it led to a few of the other starters struggling.

Makes sense, as long as the contract is reasonable in value.

Whether it's Olynyk or other 5s, I never want to see Scottie guarding opposing center again. This team needs beef, and backup beef at all times.

You saw it yesterday, what Chris can bring is unique on this team..ideally, it would be interesting to see them play both(KO) together

I want him signed, then Porter too. Then ALSO still look for another C who can make a 3 so KO can spend most of his time as a bench PF to stretch the floor, but can also play in the paint and would be good for help defense inside.

Tired of having crap depth at C.

Makes sense. This roster already has its championship core. Barnes, IQ and Barrett. Just needs some complementary vets around them until they mature.
