He's giving a human response. He can and should believe if push comes to shove, he can lead a team to a win better than anyone else. Boston has, by far, the best record in the league right now. It is not unreasonable for him to think he's playing the right way to lead to wins.

I dislike Tatum and the Celtics greatly. But I take Tatum ten times out of ten over Embiid as my best player.

Then you're player isn't winning a chip. He's showing he's the best player in the league. The NBA yearns for an American superstar who is up there with the greats, and he's not. He's a rung below and its clear as day.

Embiid continues to fail in the playoffs in a more spectacular way. Embiid doesn't make the players around him better, Tatum can though. And really, that's why he never should have been MVP (there, that will help you answer the other post above).

Embiid is by far the bigger stat whore and empty numbers guy on given days.

Embiid's health is questionable and after another surgery isn't going to have any rosier an outlook. Embiid is 30 in weeks and you get alot more kicks at the can with Tatum.

And I laughed, Joel Embiid is not "up there with the greats".

Flat out embarrassing. Didn’t think it could get worse than the altitude posts but here we are.

Has these meltdowns about the Celtics every few weeks inbetween his Embiid meltdowns.

Dude wants to sit here and **** on a 25 year old top 10 player for having a lot of confidence and belief in his ability.

Meanwhile his favourite player is near 30 and hasn’t sniffed the ECF.

If you’re really amazing at a sport, you absolutely believe you’re as good as anyone. That’s how it works. These guys don’t get to where they are by thinking ooh no maybe I’m a little worse than them.

Just remember Tatum had an awful game 6 for 3 quarters against Philly last season and got hot late to win the game for the Celtics. He confidently states after the game he’s one of the best players in the world and had the confidence to pull through. OP probably thought that was ludicrous too. Then Tatum drops 50 the next game.

I want him to say I need to get better. I need to win a chip, and I need to win an MVP. I need to be consistent in the playoffs, which comes in spurts. I need to improve my game, where its not so one dimensional.

When he says he's the best player in the world, it comes off as, oh that stuff doesn't matter, or I've accomplished a lot.

He has good playoff success, but I've not seen him take his game to another level in the playoffs like many on the list I shared do.

I actually like Embiid too and think his hate on this board gets overboard but the OP making threads like this isn’t helping his case at all. I’m sure if Embiid came out and said he believes he’s the best player in the league OP would be bragging about it and would be writing essays defending his comments lol. The thing is in sports as well is that things constantly change. One day someone supposedly isn’t good enough. Then things happen and they are.

Is Tatum seriously supposed to think and say that he thinks Giannis is better for example if they play in the series?

I’d be concerned as hell if the Celtics best player was going into a series thinking oh no Giannis is simply better, he’ll outplay me. Serious loser energy.

Players and teams are there to be topped for new ones to take over. That doesn’t happen without players having extreme confidence in themselves to be able to climb the mountain.

I don't understand why fans always react to this. We've seen hundreds of NBA players say this over the years. It's an extremely normal mentality for a high-performing athlete to have. Confidence is simply a huge part of playing well. From hitting shots to summoning energy for defense/rebounding, everything flows a little more naturally when you believe in yourself.

I don't even blink if Patrick Beverly says it. Jayson Tatum? A sure-fire top 10 player trying to win a championship? He better go out there and believe he's too much for Giannis/Jokic to handle.
