Just in case you're not hyped enough. The reviews just hit and they're fantastic.

Basically the only negative I'm seeing is folks' varying degrees of story convolution they're willing to accept. And I mean, I get it. It's FF7 and they're making it even more complex than it already was. But that bodes super well if that pretty expected bit is the only con, and even with it only a couple scores are popping up under 9.

Is playing the original required if I want to play the remake?

Remake or Rebirth?

I wouldn't jump right into Rebirth without playing Remake. I'm sure you can, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice I think. OTOH, I wouldn't worry about playing the original FF7 before playing Remake. You'll be missing out on nostalgia and some easter eggs, but there's nothing holding you back from experiencing the new story they're telling and the incredible combat system.

I would say no. I still love playing the original cuz it's a classic with an incredible story and characters, but the gameplay and visuals might be too dated for some.

There’s definitely co-op shenanigans I want to do. And I guess I could do an evil playthrough. Such a rare treat that a game I was hyped for since it was announced exceeded my expectations.

Thanks folks. Maybe I'll give it a shot this weekend. Been sitting on the shelf for a year.

I'm going to wait and see to hear from people who thought the first was kind of meh.

A thing to keep in mind - it's a great 30 hour game in a 40 hour package. I wish they'd trimmed some of the filler, but thankfully the combat and vibes carry it through those bits.

I think the only real negatives from remake was that it was linear and some people didn’t like the combat for some reason right? I really don’t remember well. Just seems like this going to be another great addition to the series

“Project L,” the long anticipated fighting game set in the League of Legends universe, finally had its official name revealed.

2XKO.

This has to be one of the worst names ever, it does not roll off the tongue at all.

For me just way too much of it felt like filler. I didn't mind the combat, although did find it kind of annoying how knowing what fight was coming up took things from tough to trivial with some gear changes.

I still don't love the combat of Remake and basically every FF game since they abandoned turn-based, but just putting it on easier difficulty makes it a fun button-masher. Will co-sign on the filler being a bit too much though. Anyone who's played the original will know that the game only really starts to take off once you're out of Midgar, and rather than flesh out the stories of some of the other side characters, they mainly just "content filler'd" it and put in a bunch of fetch quests where you're running around the same areas over and over.

Yeah, the combat is awesome IMO. I really think you in particular will enjoy it, DB. Give it a shot on normal before you go down to easy.

The Last Epoch launch for online has been one server issue after another, unfortunately. I think the hype got so big that their stress test numbers just couldn't compete with what they ended up seeing. It's tough, because a game like this will never (anytime soon) hit launch numbers regularly, so it's a balance of how much time and money to commit to launch. Not excusing it - just don't think it's easy to navigate, especially for a small team.

Luckily, while they work this out, they have a 100% true offline mode. Don't even need an internet connection to play. Been playing it a lot and it's absolutely fantastic. Once they get the servers worked out I think there are going to be a lot, lot of happy people. All of the changes they made have hit. The new classes rock. They made a ton of graphics, sound, and UX upgrades. The Circle of Fortune (the faction you can use if you don't want to trade - including in offline mode) is awesome. It's all just so, so good.
