Way too early…what Detroit can get for their top pick

Post#1 » by eitanr » Sun Feb 25, 2024 1:41 am

The Pistons are starting to form the makings of an actual roster with Cade/IveyThompson hopefully surrounded by veteran talent and better spacing. The team is favored to get a top pick in 2024 and don’t have any more room to develop said rookie appropriately.

If they draft Williams out of Colorado where does he play? Cade, Ivey and Ausur are similar and need more usage for development? Same goes with other rookies coming out. The pistons simply have other youth they need to develop that need usage..another one may seem enticing but can also stunt everyone’s development in the process.

It could make more sense for Detroit to move the pick, but for whom? 2024 isn’t considered a great draft so what value does such a pick yield? Below are a few options:

1. Mikal Bridges

Sure, he’s enticing and 27 and a perfect complement to their youth long term. But what would he cost? I’d think given rumors of Houston offering at least BK’s picks and swaps pack…bridges could cost at least that top pick, Thompson and Grimes. It sounds like a lot for Detroit, but literally every team in the league will be seeking Bridges via a trade, if BK even went that route…unsure this package is worthy and even gets Bridges at all

2. Deni Avidja

Sounds crazy I know. Deni’s stock is rising super high right now. The Wiz though don’t have a ton of future prospects and while Deni is a bright spot, he’s unhappy there. The Poole/Kuz tandem isn’t working and wiz need a fresh start. They could get the first 2 picks and build around that talent. Meanwhile for Detroit Deni is a pretty perfect fit. He adds defense and shooting and is only 23. Better yet, the Pistons could still keep their youth and keep building.

Moving the top pick sounds like a lot for Deni, but given the fit and the age…is it so crazy for Detroit to consider?

Too early. They need to actually hit the jackpot with a 1st before starting to trade them away

Moving the pick for a player like Avidja REALLY feels like a move that could bite us.

I don’t consider Bridges attainable for any realistic package.

This draft feels to me like the 2020 class. It's "weak" on paper, but Anthony Edwards, LaMelo Ball, Tyrese Haliburton, etc. are all really good players. I would just trust your scouting and keep the upside of the pick. Also, maybe have a new GM make the pick.

Where did you Avdija being unhappy? Sounds like you just made that up boss.

And no, the Wizards aren't trading Deni for anyone in this upcoming crapshoot of a draft.

It’s def more whether Wiz want to go a drastic route here. The thought sounds crazy for most, but considering Deni’s ascendence and the current development already sucked into him, it’s tough to say whether it is worthwhile for Wiz so wanted to guage

Just curious... who would Detroit take if the draft was today and they picked 1st?

Surely they should keep the team, but personally I would try to change for Markkanen. I think it's the closest thing to a perfect fit... Cade/Ivey/Ausuar/Lauri/Duren.. +Sasser/Grimes/Fontecchio/Stewart and salary margin for another good player

I’d like Richasher or Sarr.

Richasher would need usage as a perimeter talent though, but if he’s the future the team can make that tough decision later of who to move. He won’t necc need usage right away to develop

Sarr is more of a project, but at 7-1 and potential spacing combined with terrific D, he’s more interesting.

Neither talent may go 1, so would consider trading 1 if possible.

Was thinking Lauri, but Pistons also have long term defensive woes and need someone who can really play off ball well.

Lauri can, but you’re not getting his full value in that role. Also the timeline isn’t perfect neither is the D. The fact that Deni is playing this well in a pretty poor situation and is only 23, makes me excited for his future as almost a better defensive Dentlef Schremph. I get why Wiz fans are excited too!

I think the Jazz should be more motivated than the WIZARDS to trade for a top pick...since if they keep Lauri, they'll probably be too good to pick a top 3...I think this year would be the right one, you trade Lauri for a pick 1/3...you choose your prospect and pay your debt to the Thunder...this move ensures they stink next year and pick high in a draft with potential superstars...I would even consider trading Kessler (if they get Sarr from the trade Lauri) with something about the GRIZZLIES team... Kessler+Futuro FRP protected for #6... Taking a full tank year...

Yeah, we’re among the league worst in offense and defense.

What we really need is a super young big man who’s got great offensive and defensive upside.

Better get on the phone with OKC and San Antonio- see if Chet or Wemby are available.

That’ll get us out of this pickle.

If they don’t love Williams or Topic or Sarr or whoever, they should really just keep the tank going and trade to 10-12. Get a couple extra future assets. Looking at Ainge or Presti there.

But I’d really look at Trae. Realgm logic says Trae should only get traded to San Antonio.. But I think Atlanta would retool without their picks if they get a guy they feel is a young star back for Trae. They’ll get assets for Murray, and have Jalen as a young guys they should love on top of some other young pieces.

Neither team would do this move. The Wizards love Deni and he is on a complete bargain of a contract. Despite your one quote about fans not showing up, there is zero indication Deni is unhappy in DC. Also not sure how moving Deni does anything to help the Poole/Kuz tandem?

If Deni is going to force his way out of DC, which I wouldn't blame him for, it would be to a winner. The Detroit Pistons are every bit as bad as the Wizards. Their current talent level is a little better but the future is just as bleak.

Kind of doubt he went from "this is a second home" to wanting out in 6 weeks.

I suspect Utah would have reservations, but I'd move our pick in a package for Markannen IF he agreed to extend for a few years (without looking it up though I wonder if that will be difficult, as his extension will only be able to be a certain percentage above his current salary which is dirt cheap given his value).

Another young player with potential is always nice, but we need to get some talent around our young core and start to build a winning culture.

The last time you had a young player for 1st overall trade it was Kevin Love, who was a 25 year old 3 time All-Star, 2 time All-NBA level player, joining a team that was ready to win right away. It was also the worst draft ever. Deni Avjda is not the level of player who brings back a 1st round pick even in a fairly unimpressive draft.

Towns? He is 28, locked in, provides shooting/spacing. Wolves can do a pick swap.

Wolves would need to like Topic as PGOF. Maybe Williams or Risacher and when ready push McDaniels to PF. Or Sarr as replacement for Towns.

Sure solves money crunch problems for Wolves.

I don't think Detroit is the right place/culture for KAT.

He's doing better in Minny nowadays, you guys should keep him.

People were amped about that draft in my recollection.

It was not a bad draft, but it was pretty average after Embiid broke his foot. Wiggins had tons of question marks for a #1 prospect.
