Murray is hurt and this is a lingering injury and Malone basically came out and said that their main concern is going into the playoffs healthy. With Murray hurt I expect Jokic’s stats to go up but I don’t think Denver can get the 1 seed with Murray being in or out of the lineup and may possibly stay at either 4 or 5. I think the voters(and more so talking heads) are looking for a reason not to give it to Jokic and if Denver doesn’t get the 1 seed( in contrast to SGA and Tatum’s team having it or competing for it) that will be it.
Now if Jokic were to somehow get the 1 seed with Murray’s injury then the conversation is over.
Tatum has almost zero chance. The only player to win MVP with numbers anywhere near that far behind the leaders since the ‘70s is Steve Nash. He had a super strong narrative, first lifting the Suns record upon getting traded there and then raising his numbers and keeping the team steady with Amare out.
It’s realistically between SGA and Jokic with Giannis as a dark horse and Luka having an outside shot if the Mavs go on a crazy run to finish the year and the other candidates fall. If you bet on Tatum at 50:1, you’re basicallt lighting your money on fire though.
