Hawks Keep Trae - Retool a better fitting roster around him

Post#1 » by NYG » Tue Feb 27, 2024 3:32 am

If the Hawks keep Trae, I don't see them rebuilding (aka trading veterans for picks/prospects), but rather retooling around betting fitting veterans...

If the Hawks were to offer Hunter, Capela, Bogdanovic and Murray for better fits around Trae... who are some players that make sense in return?

Ingram and Daniels (and Nance?)
for
Murray and Okongwu

Picks needed? Pels improve at PG and C long-term, while clearing a path for their young wing players (Murphy, Hawkins, Herb). Hawks get wing co-star and young elite defender to cover for Young.

Okongwu/ Valanciunas
Zion/ Murphy
Herb/ Ryan
McCullom/ Hawkins
Murray/ Jose

Capela/ Nance
Johnson/ Hunter
Ingram/ Griffin
Daniels/ Bogdan
Young/ Bufkin

I would change Trae the Spurs...for the Spurs team and recover their own ..
and Murray to Houston for J.Green+Eason...
I would select Topic
and try to change the #10 + Capella for Clarke + #6

#6 to select Stephon Castle...
with 19 select R.Dunn.. if he is still on the board..
Send Hunter+Bogdanovic for P.Reed and a future FRP..
Take this year as a year of development in the face of a loaded Draft.
The Hawks rebuild around... Topic/Green/Eason/JJ/OO
+Bufkin/Castle/Griffin/Dunn/Clarke...

If they stay with Trae..
NOP seems like a perfect partner.. Murray+OO+Griffin+FRP for Herb +Ingram
1+1=11

It really depends on where their picks land.

But I’d do

Grant and Thybulle for Hunter, Griffin, Sac first, and the 2027 first (top 8 protected for a couple years)

Capela/Jalen/Grant/Murray/Trae
With a lot of minutes with Grant at the four and Thybulle at the 2-3.

But if Atlanta maintains their position, you likely don’t need to involve the 2027 first. I’m only using it with the hope that Atlanta bottoms out without Trae and increases their chances at a top 4 pick..

My first move:
Hawks trade Murray
Wizards trade Kuzma
Both teams think each player is worth more. The reason I like it is Washington can S&T Jones, so they are able to look at other positions and potentially get a pick from wherever Jones lands.
Hawks are getting back a player who is on a declining contract. Also the Kuzma rumors means someone values him.

Hawks trade Capela to the Pelicans for Jones/Nance.
Pelicans get a defensive center to protect the lane -on his last year contract. And move Jones before required to pay him.
Hawks bringing in a young player to run. And Nance will be cut.

Hawks trade Hunter to OKC for Dortz/Jaylin Williams.
Hawks get a young potential center and a SF/2G with defensive tendencies.
Thunder get a player shooting over 40% from 3 who can spread the floor.

Hawks recast with less ball dominant players. And depending on their draft slot, could get Filipowski Clingan or later in the draft Edy if they are BPA.

The problem with the Hawks isn't fit, it's talent. Just get the same kind of players but bigger and better.

They don't own their 2027 first - the Spurs do. Same with 2025 and a 2026 swap, which makes it a little harder to trade for better players.

They're horrific on defense this year, so I'd say targeting better defenders would be a priority.

Yeah, you’re right. I don’t know why I missed that as I just went on a rant in another thread.. but it works with the 2029 first the same.

But feel like Grant/Thybulle taking 45-50 minutes from Bogdan/Hunter/Hunter would have a huge impact on the defense.

I think Towns is an amazing fit and upgrade. Problem is Jalen Johnson would be the target for Wolves. Hawks would need to be ok with a deal centered around him, one of Okongwu or Capela, and other salary to make it work.

Combine a couple ideas from this thread…

To Hawks: Towns

To Pels: Murray + Okongwu (or Capela)

To Wolves: Daniels + Herbert + LNJ + Hawks Picks (24 for sure, future?)

Is that enough to Wolves for Towns? Should Pels add?

If talent is the case then they should just rebuild including trading Trae

You and Brooklyn look like good trade partners

DFS and Cam for Dejounte and Capela kind of deal if they lose Claxton?

How would you feel about DFS and Cam for Dejounte and Capela? That gives you some wing/forward help without disrupting the core.

Which vets that would be on the trade market make sense for Atlanta?
