It has worked twice! He's trying to make the defender think it's an easy blow by and immediately switch up to contest their shot instead.
Jokic just used this tactic yesterday to intercept a seemingly easy dump off pass.

The best players will always try and find unique solutions to complicated problems. In 2v1's when Kyle seemed seemingly helpless defending alone he would play possum for a split second and then lung at the passer's lob angle and sometimes deflect their alley oop attempt.

These guys are basically trying to turn a no win scenario into a win 2/10 times

Except Barnes does it in the half court in drop coverage and watches their guy simply float it overtop or step by him.

He is a great defender generally but his weird obsession with pretending to take charges that never come is just weird

Yeah he does it too often and it is silly but the fact that he's a bit silly is the part of him I like. The part of him I don't like is when he's joyless and deflated and seemingly angry at his teammates. This and the stop and wait on transition dunks are unique parts of his game that come from his personality. I'm just saying, he does the phantom charges too much, but I've seen it work twice somewhat recently and I also think he doesn't do it as often anymore.

His handlebar mustache game will be point. Call it the Bruce Brown influence...

Let us pray that is the only influence Bruce Brown has on Dick.

3. Gradey Dick, on the move
Dick has cracked double figures in four of his past seven games -- including three 18-point games -- despite averaging only about 20 minutes as a reserve. The Toronto Raptors have been starving for a movement shooter, and Dick roves in unpredictable patterns. He's tall and can speed up his release to launch in tight confines.

He has nifty chemistry with Kelly Olynyk:

Toronto runs that set a lot: Dick screening for the Raptors' lead ball handler -- Scottie Barnes here -- and then rocketing off a flare screen from Olynyk. The first screen puts defenses in a bind. Switching usually results in a weaker defender taking Barnes. Dick's defender lingering to help on Barnes risks leaving Dick open for a triple.

Part two -- Olynyk's screen -- might create even more bad choices, since it pairs two players of different sizes who can both hit quick-trigger 3s. Switch, and Olynyk plows his way to the basket. Trapping Dick opens a runway for Olynyk, and Dick can already make those passes.

These actions only work in the long haul if the offensive team has counters depending on the defense response.

This time, the Pacers stay closer to Dick and stick to Olynyk instead of trapping. Dick reads all of that, and flies to the rim.

Dick looks like a capable role player. Opponents will hunt him on defense, and some matchups will be too much for him. But Dick moves his feet and has good anticipation.

The Raptors probably didn't get quite as much as they hoped in the combined Siakam and OG Anunoby deals, but they may have ended up with about 80% or 90% of what they would have received had they moved a year earlier. Giving last season's team a shot was worth that gap in trade return.

Flipping a late 2024 first-round pick -- one they received from the Pacers for Siakam -- for Olynyk and Ochai Agbaji was a nice flier, and very on brand for a franchise that seems to want to reboot and remain at least semi-competitive at the same time.

He did a good job trying to find offense in other ways while his shot wasn't falling. Some very good mid range buckets.

I think his play does make it apparent that he is more than a thre point shooter. Teams are starting to really stick to him out there and he's attacking that when possible.

Teams are really starting to zero in on Gradey and giving him a lot less open space, but I like how he's been attacking closeouts and pulling up for the mid-range jumper or going all the way to the rim to combat the tighter coverage. He has come a long way in his rookie season where 12/2/3/1 on 5/11 shooting is just a solid game lately.

Make him a combo guard in summer league to develop a handle and pick and roll ability.

It’s that type of attention that will create space and opportunity for other guys

And you’re right on how he is attacking close outs…I’ve been saying this for months, he’s so much more than a shooter.

With Scottie out, Dick is now must see TV.

He should be slotted into Gary’s starting SG spot for next year

Also loving Dick’s D progression. He’s being targeted and attacked but showing improvements and starting to hold his own.

I’ve been saying his biggest issue there was he was just too physically weak. He’s a smart player and good enough laterally to be at least a competent defender once he bulks up a bit.

Who is team tank going to watch and fawn over now that Barnes is injured, and they embarassed themselves for half the season slagging Gradey Dick in the most spectacularly stupid ways?

Don’t force him into the starting lineup.
His minutes go up slightly with no Barnes, but continue to have GD in a similar role IMO

Agreed.

More minutes. More plays run for him. More opportunity to develop.

Get him ready to take Gary’s spot next year.

Zach Lowe had positive reviews on gradey also including his defense.

The most 'per 36' points in the last 30 days:

RJ Barrett .............. 22.6 pts.
Gradey Dick ........... 20.2 pts.
Scottie Barnes ......... 19.8 pts.
Immanuel Quickley ... 19.0 pts.
etc.

Gradey Dick
FG% ............. 57.0%
3Pt% ............ 51.8%
FT% ............ 100.0%
We all have different opinions, and that is one thing that makes this forum great.

Can someone explain plus minus to me? Why the hell was Dick a -2?

I thought he had a *good* game imo.
