Who should replace Barnes as a starter?

Post#1 » by Thaddy » Sun Mar 3, 2024 9:15 pm

If the front office still wants to go for the play in Brown, Olynyk, or Boucher could be started to increase their value. These guys are on the way out and they could secure more interest.

Agbaji would replace Barnes as our POA defender that guards the opposing best player. It would increase his value and give him the opportunity to showcase his game. It would open up more shots for Barrett and Quickely. Hopefully Gary doesn't take those...

Dick is currently our best prospect outside of Barnes. He has increased his output quite a bit and he's been great off the bench. This would be a good opportunity to contrast him with Gary. If he out performs Gary as a starter it would likely spell the end of Gary's tenure as a Raptor.

Takes:
- Darko goes with Bruce Brown because, unfortunately, he's all for the veterans and he wants to continue trying to win. The front office might have a hand in this and hope it raises his value.

- Brown further decreases his value and we regret not trading him for the Knick 24' 1st

He won't even be playing in the Summer League now?

Just put Gradey in there. Take Gary out (he ain’t staying imo). Add Kelly.

Brown is not an option tonight.

I hope Gradey starts.

I’d go with Mcadniels or Porter

I was actually thinking of offering Pops Mensah-Bonsu a 10-day.

I think they should remove GTJ also and add Agbaji and Dick. Dick at this stage is actually more skilled than GTJ and Agbaji's defense will be needed.

Was going to say the same thing. Makes most sense just to pull Gary from the SL and insert the two young kids. Only argument against it is would it put too much pressure on the kids to perform.

Torn between Gradey for developmental emphasis or Brown for trade value (he needs to work through his sh*t before draft night).

They went with Agbaji and it comes back to the defensive concern Gradey has. If he was slightly heavier and stronger there would be some confidence he could cover 4s.

Thought this was about summer league. But the starting lineup definitely has to have our star rookie. Let Gradey get used to it

Agbaji is a good choice. We need someone that can guard forwards and quick guards. It'd be interesting to see if he can improve his handle and create his own shots. Agbaji has a range issue but the corner and mid range shot should be good.

Develop Dick. We have nothing to play for now with Barnes done for the season. I'd like to see Dick go up against starters and gain confidence in that role. I think his skillset will be best utilized next year as the starting SG/SF

They need to get Gary out of the SL and Gradey in there. Gradey would fit so much better with the rest of the starters (Yak or KO, RJ, IQ & OA).

Gary can be the gunner off the bench.

Agbaji was the right choice and would've been my pick had I seen this before the game yesterday.
Dick and Trent together is too small, and Trent off the bench has been a nightmare.
I think we'll continue to see Agbaji in this role purely for the D and size matchups, with maybe a quick hook for Gradey if it appears we need more shooting.

Trent has been so inconsistent this year, I don't even think it is worth trying to keep him in the SL. He most likely won't be hear next season, so why not just start Dick and Ochai with Yak, RJ & IQ now, to see how that 5 man unit works. Dick would be a nice fit with the starters, as there is enough talent on the floor that Dick should get some open looks, and his gravity will help create space for IQ & RJ.

Idea is put Gradey and Ochai in the best possible situation to succeed/develop.

That begs the question - is putting Dick in the SL the best possible situation for his success/development?
He very clearly was not ready for the NBA at the start of the season. Going against top tier defenders and having to guard superstars might very well be counterproductive to his development, considering most rookies develop better against lower tier competition in the G.
