I am Chicago, and I want to get better

Post#1 » by OriAr » Thu Mar 7, 2024 3:05 pm

I am Chicago, I really don't want to embrace the tank, but I still want to get better and become a top 6 team in the east next year.
Only player who's untouchable is Coby White, the rest are up for grabs and I am willing to deal any picks as long as I can protect them top 10 (Unless of course a superstar is available in which case I have no problem sending unprotected picks).
What deals should I do?

Chicago needs to do a tear down like Orlando did a few years ago. Clear the books and get as many picks to reset.

I don’t think Chicago is in position of giving up picks, protected or not. They need to continue to draft good and build off youth.

They need to be willing to take a step back in order to take two steps forward and truly try to build a winning culture.

I would go a different direction and try to sell off Vucevic/Caruso (assuming Derozan is gone). A lot of people are underselling this coming draft and if Chicago scouts well could come out big. Target teams like Orlando that don’t really have the space for another rookie.

Rehabilitate Lavines value and ship him off the second someone is willing to give neutral value (expirings).

Chicago shouldn’t be trying to contend while calling their most valuable asset is off limits. They do not have the leverage/asset base for that.

I think 2024 first, 2027/2029/2031 could return a star level player. But I don’t think there’s a star available for that package that makes Chicago an actual contender.

If you add Coby, you can try and create a three year window and then rebuild once Vuc/Demar/star decline.

But Ball as salary, 2024 first, 2027 probably unprotected, 2029 top 10 protected should get a really good player. It’s not Lauri. But it’s too much for DJM or Grant, etc. Depends on how Chicago finishes this season really.

I'm kinda expecting them to pursue something like:

Caruso to NYK;
Ball + FRP (or 2) to Washington;
White to Orlando;
Black + Williams + FRP (or 2) to Atlanta;
Kuzma + Hunter + Murray to Chicago, with the Bulls not touching any of their own future picks.

Murray | Dosunmu | Carter
Lavine
DeRozan | Hunter | Terry
Kuzma
Vucevic | Cap'n Jack
+ #12

Maybe they can even use their own pick (#12 ATM) to turn Lonzo into Kuzma on draft night and hold onto Caruso, if he is willing to re-sign in Chicago:

Murray | Caruso | Carter
Lavine | Dosunmu
DeRozan | Hunter | Terry
Kuzma
Vucevic | Cap'n Jack

Tear it down. It’s a shame Ball and LaVine’s injuries, but realistically, this team isn’t going anywhere. Trade all vets, get youth and picks, prepare to lose a lot for a couple of years. Draft well, get your cap space in order.

The Bulls tore it down in the past and the owners don't like that

They have passed on the last 3 deadlines and not done much dealing in the summer aside from signing some role players and buying a 2nd round pick to take Phillips which looks like a good move. They can't be satisfied so they are primed to deal.

They have

White Carter Terry
Dosunmu Bitim
Maybe Vucevic
maybe Williams
Craig Phillips

pretty much set

I guess people just latch on to this fairy tale that some team will give the Bulls real tangible assets in exchange for a $20M gamble on Lonzo Ball. Nobody is going to help CHI dig out of a hole. It's nuts

Unsure is does Lavine want to stay, do they want to resign DeRozan, does someone want Caruso bad enough to pay up for him. can they trade any of the players not listed above.

While you can improve the roster, I doubt there is any feasible option for escaping the mediocracy. Tear it down as OKC did.

The management definitely has been avoiding a rebuild, probably hoping for Ball’s return. But if that is their attitude going forward, the Bulls are stuck in mediocrity.

Don’t sign DeRozan.
Trade LaVine for Simmons(?) or some other horrible contract. Then cut them and stretch the salary.
Trade Caruso w Vucevic, get youth/expirings.

There’s the reset. Then manage the cap wisely and keep accumulating youth and picks. It’s not pretty, but neither is the team in its current state.

They need to balance the roster and add size in my opinion.

Lonzo+Filling for J.Collins?..

Lavine for Miles Bridges (ST) or Lavine for MPJ?
Caruso for Naz Reid?...

What would the Lakers think of White/Caruso/Vuc+#11+FRP Future for AD?

This is the only answer that is in the best interest of the franchise.

Most of the Bulls' Board wants a rebuild, but we highly doubt it will happen. Our FO is going to stay the course, and stay mediocre. A 2023 trade deadline fire sale would have put us in a MUCH better place, and we could have easily fallen to 5th or 6th last spring, to get a shot at Wemby.

At least the team is entertaining and plays hard. DDR will be back, and probably Drummond too and we'll win 40ish games next season

If they refuse to tear it down...find a way to get Dejounte paired with Lavine. Lavine's not going anywhere without taking a big hit, so double down with a guy he gets along with and is actually a solid pairing with...suddenly you've got a very compatible exciting backcourt...everything on the table. Maybe a SnT of Derozan + Caruso gets you close to Murray?

Not sure what CHI's pick stash looks like

It is multi-layered approach to improving the Bulls.
Step 1: identify the player(s) that are going to remain on the team moving forward.
OP has identified White as that one player. So everyone us trade material.
Step 2: Find a trade partner for DeRozan in a S&T. For the Bulls it returns an asset, for the o trade partner it could save cap money. Bulls need to determine who that player they want.
Step 3: what picks can be returned for all of the remaining players. Make those trades even if it creates a strange team as long it brings in picks and expiring contracts or non-guaranteed contracts.
Set the Bulls up for maximum cap space as quickly as possible.

Sign Patrick Williams to a reasonable contract.

Let DeRozan go or S & T for any kind of draft return.

Trade Caruso,Craig to someone for a 1st round pick. (maybe OKC + Kenrich Williams? Lets say this works )
Trade for Kispert with Carter and some 2nds.
Trade Ball to Pistons or Jazz or Wiz for neutral value or nothing.
Do the same thing with Lavine, send him to Orlando for Isaac and 2nds (or send 2nds,doesnt matter, just get rid of the dude.)

Sign Tuys Jones as a starter for 2 years (he and White can start,Dosunmu as a 6th man)
Sign Buddy Hield as a starter 1 year (let Buddy shoot)
Sign Cam Payne.

Draft a big (Almansa or Filipowski or Chomche)

Resign Drummond.

Use the rest of your cap space in 2025,unless a good player becomes available this summer.

.................................................................................
Jones,Payne
White,Dosunmu
Hield,Kispert,Terry
P.Williams,Isaac,K.Williams,Philips
Vuc,Drummond,Almansa

.................................................................................

Not a great squad by any chance, but u do a bit of reset,u clear your cap space and propably see if you can handle the keys of the franchise to White and Williams until the next thing happens rosterwise.I really like this bench squad though.

Chicago won’t tear it down. They are consistently beating quality teams with $70+ million sitting in street clothes every night.

I think they will move forward with their current roster but trade Zach, Lonzo & maybe Vuc to add around the rotation they currently play every night. It’s certainly a different direction but the injuries have forced them to have a different look.

And give up all of the revenues they'd lose by getting out of that tax-free play-in life? Good luck selling ownership on that.

What is DeRozan’s value on a sign and trade?
Would DeRozan for Wiggins/TJD/24FRP be worth it or is it too much of an overpay to move Wiggins?
