#27 for future 2nds?

Post#1 » by jazzfan1971 » Fri Mar 8, 2024 4:38 pm

I know Utah doesn't really need to be adding even more future picks, but I'm wondering if we couldn't use some extra seconds just to use as NBA currency. Not so much to use as players.

So let's say Ainge would have interest in converting a late first into future 2nds. Who among you would make the most attractive offer?
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

Not sure about attractive offer but this is Denver's jam.

2026, 2029, and 2030 DEN 2nds?

This feels like a strong opening bid. I wonder if anyone else will try to top this?

To be clear, it's not my team, so can't say that they would actually offer that. But I think that's the concept.

Depends on who is there but, as I read it, the last 1st round is shallow but the average 2nd round prospect pool is deep. Good for teams with 2nd round picks, bad for 20-30. With how the last draft shook out with risers and fallers it could be a good get.

That being said magic have a bucket of 2nds if they had plans to package 27 with their own pick to move up (assuming that deal materializes on draft night).

Not suggesting they would offer all of these, but this is a trade the Wizards should consider if available. Currently Washington owns the following 2nds:

2024: PHX
2025:PHX, WAS
2026:CHI, WAS, MIN/NYK/NOP/POR, PHX
2027: GSW, PHX, WAS, BKN or DAL, CHI
2029: LAL
2030: PHX, WAS

Not sure how the 2026 pick works, but needless to say this is more second round picks than Washington could realistically utilize. Consolidation trades to target players late in the first has to be a consideration.

The reason that Olynyk and Agbaji were traded together instead of separately was to consolidate assets to get a single first instead of two mid seconds.

I'm pretty sure the plan is to take #28 and #31 and trade up to somewhere in the mid 20s.

I was giving the Jazz plan some thought this morning. I see it going like

Use all 3 picks. BPA.

Renegotiate and extend Lauri.

Resign Dunn if possible.

PG - Keyonte, Dunn
SG - Sexton, Clarkson
SF - Lauri, Sensebaugh
PF - Collins, Hendricks
C - Kessler, Yertseven
D - #8, #27, #31, FA#1, FA#2, (Yertseven is really here, the other guys are your 9man rotation)

If we can't retain Dunn have to target a FA pg. Other than this, I think our season is largely done. I would love to move Clarkson, but he's tanked his value with his play this year. So, he's our problem now. Collins could possibly be moved at the trade deadline, but only if there is good value there for him.

All in all I don't expect any big moves this coming year. Just work on developing our own players and keep powder dry.

Jim it depends on who you view as weaker teams and how far out you want the picks.
Phoenix if it is several years down the road would be a phone call. Portland and SAS if you are thinking in the next year or 2. Nets if you are willing to wait 3 years.
When you look for the bad in something, expecting to find it, you certainly will.

I would be looking for ones down the road. I probably just want to trade them for vets at that point and not use the picks anyway. And until we are better there is no point in trading for vets.

Lauri is definitely getting moved at next deadline. The "wait for a star to demand a trade to Utah" thing just doesn't make sense and the Jazz need to hyper tank in 2025 and 2026 after it fails once again.

Maybe. But, my crystal ball says no.

Ainge will probably start doing the Presti thing offering up really low 1sts for potential high reward swaps, as contenders like those cheap cost controlled contracts

If they can extort like a 2026 or 2028 swap from a. Win now team that will suck in 3-5 years they should

Utah is better off doing a deal like OKC did last year.

Trade worst of MIN/CLE 2025 1st along with #27 to a win-now team for a lightly protected 1st in 5-6 years.

Jazz send the 27th pick to LAL for a Swap in 29 and a #2 in 2025.

Agree that Presti showed the right template for Ainge to follow here.

The most interesting trade I could come up with for the Jazz is the Jazz gaining the right to trade their worst 2028 and 2030 picks for the worst of the Bucks/Blazers picks in 2028 and 2030.

It's not clear either of the Bucks or Blazers will be good in 2028 or 2030 so these swaps could be valuable.

Meanwhile, this is pretty much the Bucks drawing blood from a stone to get an asset for depth.

Presti just traded a (nearly?) guaranteed late first for a single swap. And was celebrated for getting it

Don’t know that Indy would, but the 3 seconds they got from Philly should be enough for 27. And I could see adding a player now versus later.
