It is almost like guys have to perform well at their job to secure a good contract

The NFLPA as a whole can't really "get abused" by the way the rookie contracts are structured. The salary cap is a fixed percentage of NFL income, so contract structure only determines how that money gets distributed among players. If the NFLPA wants more fairness they should look at eliminating the huge QB dead cap hits for example.
